Official Handbook. <\/em>Dublin: Talbot Press, 1932.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Treaty of 1922 resulted in the formation of the Irish Free State. This tenth anniversary book, published under the Minister for Industry and Commerce and edited by Bulmer Hobson, is intended to show the world how Ireland has developed in all areas, from science and industry to education and art. The book is profusely illustrated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cover design by Art O\u2019Murnaghan (1872-1954), is clearly making reference to the style of early Irish illuminated manuscripts. London: Day &amp; Son, 1861.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An earlier example of the celebration of early Irish art is found in \u2018The Cromlech on Howth\u2019, a book that combines the fascination and research into Irish art and literature with a poem by Samuel Ferguson, decoration by Margaret Stokes, and an essay on Irish script by George Petrie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/03\/blog-IrishCovers-spines.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"789\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/03\/blog-IrishCovers-spines-789x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8496\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/03\/blog-IrishCovers-spines-789x1024.jpg 789w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/03\/blog-IrishCovers-spines-231x300.jpg 231w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/03\/blog-IrishCovers-spines-768x996.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/03\/blog-IrishCovers-spines-1184x1536.jpg 1184w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/03\/blog-IrishCovers-spines-1579x2048.jpg 1579w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/03\/blog-IrishCovers-spines.jpg 1850w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 789px) 100vw, 789px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shamrocks and harps, however, have been used as emblems of Ireland for centuries, and in America in particular, book bindings of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries proclaim the Irish context with a harp, a decoration of shamrocks, or both. In <em>The Days of a Life<\/em>, by &#8220;Norah&#8221; (Margaret Dixon McDougall), is a story of Ireland showing the plight of the laborers and the abuse of the landlord class, from the perspective of a young Canadian visitor. Loeber Collection of Irish Fiction.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tiny edition of Thomas Moore&#8217;s extraordinarily popular <em>Irish Melodies <\/em>shown here includes a &#8216;female harp&#8217; combining the harp, a symbol of Ireland with the female personification of Ireland. C.
