{"id":8775,"date":"2023-07-03T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-07-03T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/?p=8775"},"modified":"2023-07-06T11:40:48","modified_gmt":"2023-07-06T15:40:48","slug":"welcome-to-the-land-of-freedom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/welcome-to-the-land-of-freedom\/","title":{"rendered":"Welcome to the Land of Freedom"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>by <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/directory.library.nd.edu\/directory\/employees\/gbond2\" target=\"_blank\">Greg Bond, <em>Sports Archivist and Curator, Joyce Sports Research Collection <\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On July 2, 1887,&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/onesearch.library.nd.edu\/permalink\/f\/8ssp1h\/ndu_aleph000230701\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Frank Leslie&#8217;s Illustrated Newspaper<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;marked the upcoming Fourth of July holiday with a cover illustration that graphically depicted the expansion of the United States. The serial was a popular weekly American publication of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and Rare Books and Special Collections is pleased to highlight here a significant recent acquisition of the first 73 bound volumes from&nbsp;1855 through 1891.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The image, titled \u201cIndependence Day\u2014A Case of Vigorous Growth,\u201d features a giant Uncle Sam wearing a top hat labeled \u201c1887\u201d standing astride the continental United States from New York to San Francisco. He extends his hand to greet a much smaller man standing on the Atlantic seaboard wearing a tri-corner hat labeled \u201c1776.\u201d \u201c1887\u201d Uncle Sam asks, \u201cHow are you, old man?\u201d; and \u201c1776\u201d responds, \u201cBless my soul, boy, how you have grown!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/06\/BOO_006310108-v64_1887-0325.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"805\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/06\/BOO_006310108-v64_1887-0325-805x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8796\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/06\/BOO_006310108-v64_1887-0325-805x1024.jpg 805w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/06\/BOO_006310108-v64_1887-0325-236x300.jpg 236w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/06\/BOO_006310108-v64_1887-0325-768x977.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/06\/BOO_006310108-v64_1887-0325-1207x1536.jpg 1207w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/rbsc\/files\/2023\/06\/BOO_006310108-v64_1887-0325.jpg 1415w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 805px) 100vw, 805px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> <em>Frank Leslie\u2019s Illustrated Newspaper<\/em>, For the week ending July 2, 1887. <br>(vol. 64, no. 1659, p. 317)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During the last half of the nineteenth century, <em>Frank Leslie\u2019s Illustrated Newspaper<\/em> catered to the reading interests of middle class Americans, and its content routinely reflected and depicted the conventional mainstream sensibilities of middle America. In 1888, <em>Leslie\u2019s<\/em> claimed a robust <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/hdl.handle.net\/2027\/msu.31293025069414?urlappend=%3Bseq=359%3Bownerid=13510798902906417-377\" target=\"_blank\">weekly circulation of 45,000<\/a> and declared that its issues \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/hdl.handle.net\/2027\/msu.31293025069414?urlappend=%3Bseq=1073%3Bownerid=13510798902906417-1097\" target=\"_blank\">reach[ed] the better class\u2014those that have taste and the means to gratify it<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 1887 Fourth of July issue of <em>Frank Leslie\u2019s Illustrated Newspaper<\/em> followed up its striking cover image with a centerfold, titled &#8220;New York\u2014Welcome to the Land of Freedom,&#8221; emphasizing the common contemporary belief that the growth of the United States had been fueled by the constant arrival of new Americans. (pp. 324\u201325)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The image references a short accompanying article, also titled \u201cWelcome to the Land of Freedom\u201d (p. 327). The text explains that the scene shows the arrival of the ocean steamer <em>Germanic<\/em> carrying immigrants from several European countries motivated, according to the the article, \u201cby the belief that here they will escape the burdens and limitations which in the Old World abridge individual freedom and the exercise of rights which are felt to be inherent.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The first glimpse of this Land of Promise,&#8221; <em>Frank Leslie\u2019s<\/em> elaborates, &#8220;must indeed be inspiriting and joyful &#8230; as they sail up our beautiful bay and for the first time see the majestic statue of Liberty, standing, so to speak, at the very gateway of the Republic.&#8221; The article concludes stirringly: &#8220;May all who sail past it to these hospitable shores find every just expectation realized, and prove in all things worthy of the citizenship which the land of freedom confers upon them.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-medium-pink-color has-text-color\">This week Special Collections is open Monday (July 3),<br>CLOSED on Tuesday (July 4),<br>and open Wednesday through Friday (July 5-7).<\/h4>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On July 2, 1887,&nbsp;Frank Leslie&#8217;s Illustrated Newspaper&nbsp;marked the upcoming Fourth of July holiday with a cover illustration that graphically depicted the expansion of the United States.
