{"id":651,"date":"2011-01-28T18:12:11","date_gmt":"2011-01-28T18:12:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/science-of-generosity\/?p=651"},"modified":"2011-01-28T18:26:03","modified_gmt":"2011-01-28T18:26:03","slug":"how-one-economist-began-to-study-generosity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/science-of-generosity\/2011\/01\/28\/how-one-economist-began-to-study-generosity\/","title":{"rendered":"How one economist began to study generosity"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_652\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/science-of-generosity\/researchers\/mark-wilhelm\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-652\" class=\"size-full wp-image-652\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/science-of-generosity\/files\/2011\/01\/Wilhelm-new.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"140\" height=\"152\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-652\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mark Wilhelm<\/p><\/div>\n<p>How I got interested in generosity and why I stay interested are two different stories.\u00a0 I took up economics because I wanted to work on income inequality, thinking that inheritances are an important factor that make inequality bigger.\u00a0 Surprisingly, Gary Becker\u2019s influential <em>Treatise on the Family<\/em> argued just the opposite: that altruistically-motivated inheritances made inequality smaller.\u00a0 That hooked my interest and I started working on helping behavior within the family.\u00a0 <!--more-->Not long afterward, in the 1990s, the national debate about welfare reform featured lots of criticism about the system.\u00a0 With so much academic work already underway about what was wrong with welfare and how to change it, I decided to work on why people supported welfare generosity in the first place.\u00a0 Working on that we found data describing contributions to international relief organizations, and got interested in why people give money to help people they do not know in other countries.
