{"id":1900,"date":"2016-07-30T18:19:00","date_gmt":"2016-07-30T22:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/sla2016\/?p=1900"},"modified":"2016-07-30T18:19:00","modified_gmt":"2016-07-30T22:19:00","slug":"week-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/sla2016\/2016\/07\/30\/week-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Week 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the past week, besides regular German lessons, I paid\u00a0a visit to\u00a0<em>Residenz<\/em> &#8211;\u00a0the former royal palace of Bavarian kings.<\/p>\n<p>The palace itself is without doubt spectacular, as the following photo of\u00a0The Hall of Antiquities witnesses as\u00a0an example:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/sla2016\/files\/2016\/07\/IMG_0626.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1901\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/sla2016\/files\/2016\/07\/IMG_0626-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0626\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/sla2016\/files\/2016\/07\/IMG_0626-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/sla2016\/files\/2016\/07\/IMG_0626-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But what really impressed me in\u00a0<em>Residenz<\/em>\u00a0was\u00a0the an\u00a0item from the Carolingian era\u00a0that are preserved in the Treasury of <em>Residenz<\/em>. It\u00a0is the prayer-book of Frankish King Charles the Bald, the grandson of Charlemagne:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/sla2016\/files\/2016\/07\/IMG_0618-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1903\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/sla2016\/files\/2016\/07\/IMG_0618-1-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0618\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/sla2016\/files\/2016\/07\/IMG_0618-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/sla2016\/files\/2016\/07\/IMG_0618-1-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is thought to be the earliest extant Latin prayer book for ruler. Before really having an opportunity to look at it in person, I had not realized how small it is: smaller than an adult&#8217;s palm. Its size hints that this prayer book was so portable and therefore probably was always carried by Charles the Bald with himself. On the other hand, The small font of\u00a0the prayer book might also suggest\u00a0that Charles the Bald probably did not really read it when praying, but used it as a memorandum, which confirms my positive evaluation about the degree\u00a0of religious knowledge that Carolingian rulers including Charles the Bald had.<\/p>\n<p>To me, as a Carolingian scholar,\u00a0the visit to\u00a0<em>Residenz<\/em> was so worthy, mostly because of the\u00a0unexpected encounter with this Carolingian treasure!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the past week, besides regular German lessons, I paid\u00a0a visit to\u00a0Residenz &#8211;\u00a0the former royal palace of Bavarian kings.
