I am currently involved in several extracurricular activities related to architecture as well as to Italian. While studying abroad in Italy for the 2015-2016 academic year, and interning in Rome during the summer of 2016, I realized my passion for learning languages and exposing myself to different lifestyles. Following graduation, I intend to move abroad and pursue my interest in learning about different cultures.

Why this summer language abroad opportunity is important to me:

The SLA Grant is important to me because I want to utilize summer months through for continuous exposure to Italian both formally and informally. My interest in Italian comes from its potential for future opportunities. It is the first language I have learned well and this accomplishment has given me a sense of independence and empowerment I have never felt before. Studying Italian both represents my academic interests and strongly indicates my life goals, because I have begun to research career opportunities in Italy so I can move there following graduation.

What I hope to achieve as a result of this summer study abroad experience:

I hope that the SLA grant will allow me to become better with the language and culture of the Italy, as well as to gain a clearer understanding of myself. I hope to meet people who share the same ambitions as I do concerning the language acquisition. I would also like this to be an opportunity to expand my network in Italy, and to learn more about how I can live successfully abroad following graduation.

My specific learning goals for language and intercultural learning this summer:

1. By the end of the summer, I hope to be able to read and comprehend advanced contemporary and historical texts in both Italian and volgare, or “old Italian.” I bought this novel last year in Italy that I’d like to be able to read!
2. By the end of the summer, I will be able to properly use and identify the different parts of Italian grammar.
3. By the end of the summer, I will speak Italian more confidently, correctly, and with greater fluidity.
4. By the end of the summer, I will recognize and understand a greater range of vocabulary.
5. By the end of the summer, I will be able to communicate, orally and through writing, at at least a professional level of Italian.

My plan for maximizing my international language learning experience:

Name: Priscilla Quaye E-mail: Priscilla.Quaye.1@nd.edu Language: Italian Location of Study: Rome, Italy Program of Study: Italiaidea Language School Sponsors: Center for the Study of Languages and Cultures and Albert J. and Helen M.
