As it slipped from the tongs, landing in a poof of powdered sugar and leaving a chocolate blob on the pristine<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4020\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/sla2017\/files\/2017\/08\/IMG_5842-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/sla2017\/files\/2017\/08\/IMG_5842-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/sla2017\/files\/2017\/08\/IMG_5842-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/sla2017\/files\/2017\/08\/IMG_5842-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4019\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4019\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4019\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/sla2017\/files\/2017\/08\/IMG_5841-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/sla2017\/files\/2017\/08\/IMG_5841-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/sla2017\/files\/2017\/08\/IMG_5841-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/sla2017\/files\/2017\/08\/IMG_5841-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4019\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Playing chess outside Casa di Alfredo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>table cloth, my host grandmother (<i>nonna) <\/i>tottered into the kitchen and quipped \u201c<i>tu sei un briccone!<\/i>\u201d Thus I learned my new favorite Italian word.<\/div>\n<p>As my friend Alex &#8211; who spent the last 6 months attending classes at the University of Bologna &#8211; told me, it is when we are mortified or hilarified, or both, when memories and bits of the language stick in our minds.<\/p>\n<p>In this context and with her voice inflection, <i>briccone <\/i>was a light hearted admonition from an elder to a younger &#8211; \u201c<i>tu sei un briccone\u201d <\/i>roughly meant \u201coh you knave, you\u201d . When I got to school that same morning and asked Giuseppe, a native Sienese and the student assistant in my class, what kind of word <i>briccone <\/i>is, he told me it would be a bad idea to call our professor, Enzo, a <i>briccone<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Later when my roommate here in Siena, Alex, forked my king and rook and I exclaimed \u201c<i>tu sei un proprio briccone<\/i>\u201d, the Italian students watching our game laughed and nodded in agreement.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, I asked <i>nonna <\/i>if she would kindly indulge my crippling espresso addiction and make me <i>un caf\u00e9 per favore<\/i>. When she asked if I would like any milk &#8211; or maybe even a macchiato, I replied that perhaps a <i>caf\u00e9 corretto <\/i>&#8211; espresso and rum or grappa combined in a 1:1 ratio &#8211; would be appropriate at this hour. When she slapped my arm in mock horror and replied \u201c<i>no, no \u00e8 sbagliato nella mattina,<\/i>\u201d I told her that all <i>bricconi <\/i>drink <i>caf\u00e9 corretto <\/i>in the morning.
