Scholl Endowed Chair in International Affairs.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-189\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/a-james-mcadams\/files\/2018\/02\/PhotoPOLSpage-300x204.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" \/>\u00a0My primary fields of research and teaching are in comparative politics, international relations, and political history. I also have a life-long fascination with political philosophy. My specific research projects have included the study of world communism, German politics, far-right politics and the crisis of democracy, the mission of the Catholic university, and internet surveillance. For sixteen years,\u00a0 between 2002 and 2018, I was Director of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nanovic.nd.edu\/\">Nanovic Institute for European Studies<\/a>, an interdisciplinary institute dedicated to the study of contemporary Europe, in the broadest sense of the term.\u00a0 I am also a fellow of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kellogg.nd.edu\/\">Helen Kellogg Institute for International Studies<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kroc.nd.edu\/\">Joan B. Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies<\/a>, and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/asia.nd.edu\/\">Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies<\/a>.
