I am a faculty member in the Department of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame, where I hold the William M. Scholl Endowed Chair in International Affairs. My primary fields of research and teaching are in comparative politics, international relations, and political history. I also have a life-long fascination with political philosophy. For sixteen years, between 2002 and 2018, I was Director of the Nanovic Institute for European Studies, an interdisciplinary institute dedicated to the study of contemporary Europe, in the broadest sense of the term. I am also a fellow of the Helen Kellogg Institute for International Studies and the Joan B. Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies. All of these institutes are affiliates of Notre Dame’s Keough School of Global Affairs. For information about my scholarship, teaching, and other interests, please consult the above links.
