{"id":1,"date":"2010-08-17T18:37:05","date_gmt":"2010-08-17T18:37:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/the-grand-wazoo\/?p=1"},"modified":"2011-12-17T17:14:43","modified_gmt":"2011-12-17T17:14:43","slug":"ten-images-of-hell-in-the-twentieth-century","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/ten-images-of-hell\/?p=1","title":{"rendered":"Ten Images of Hell in the Twentieth Century"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #008000\">A Century of Hell<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">This is a seminar about Hell.\u00a0 The Twentieth Century was a century of pure, unadulterated \u00a0Hell \u2014 two world wars; civil wars; fascist and communist dictatorships and myriad other tyrannies; genocide; racist xenophobia; populist hysteria; assassinations; and terrorism. I define the Twentieth Century as the period between July 28, 1914 (the outbreak of World War I) and September 11, 2001 (the terrorist attacks on the United States).\u00a0 We may justifiably hope that these\u00a0episodes from the\u00a0Twentieth Century do not\u00a0return to haunt us\u00a0in the Twenty-first Century.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">We will explore the century of Hell by\u00a0focusing on four themes:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">The experience of Hell.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Contending theories of Hell&#8217;s origins.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The moral implications of Hell, and finally,<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The problem of dealing with Hell.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">To address these themes, we will\u00a0draw upon\u00a0ten widely recognized images of Hell.\u00a0 These are World War I; the Holocaust; existentialism; tyranny and madness; totalitarianism; technological imperialism; moral confusion; nihilism; terrorism; and torture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">I have four goals in this seminar.\u00a0 If we achieve them, I will be pleased.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">To introduce you to a fascinating and disturbing period in the history and politics of the modern world.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">To familiarize you with four key concepts in the study of politics: description; explanation; analysis; and prescription.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">To develop your reading, writing, speaking, and arguing skills.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">To teach you how to persuade. Leadership is nothing more than the art of persuasion. All Notre Dame students should become leaders. All of your assignments will reflect this goal.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">This seminar is designed to be demanding, in terms of your time and your personality.\u00a0 Thus, you must keep up with all of your assignments to avoid being left behind.\u00a0 Additionally, I will expect each of you to be a full participant in everything we do.\u00a0 This includes speaking in class, communicating with your classmates over Concourse, and daring to think for yourself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">This Web site is the authoritative syllabus for the seminar.\u00a0 There is no paper syllabus.\u00a0 That would be\u00a0<em>soooo <\/em>1990s.\u00a0 I will modify\u00a0this\u00a0site\u00a0as we move along, offering important commentary on our progress\u00a0from time to time.
