Note:<\/strong>\u00a0With this premiere production of\u00a0Cabaret<\/em>\u00a0at Notre Dame, first produced on Broadway in 1966, the department returns to its long tradition of producing musicals. While musically oriented reviews and exhibitions at Notre Dame date from the 1860s, plays we today call “musicals” apparently first appeared on the Washington Hall stage with hugely popular Gilbert and Sullivan operettas and original student-written efforts of the 1940s.\u00a0Kiss Me Kate<\/em>\u00a0in December 1953, directed by John Tumpane, seems to have been the first departmental production of a “Broadway” musical on campus.<\/p>\n

Before\u00a0The Threepenny Opera<\/em>\u00a0in 2007, directed by Anton Juan, the department produced\u00a0West Side Story<\/em>\u00a0in 1986 in O\u2019Laughlin Auditorium as part of the Notre Dame\/Saint Mary\u2019s Theatre season. For the preceding two decades, regular musicals occurred on the Saint Mary\u2019s College campus under this arrangement, including\u00a0How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying<\/em>\u00a0(1967),\u00a0Guys and Dolls<\/em>\u00a0(1968),\u00a0Camelot<\/em>\u00a0(1969),\u00a0Oliver<\/em>\u00a0(1971),\u00a0Showboat<\/em>\u00a0(1972),\u00a0You\u2019re a Good Man, Charlie Brown<\/em>\u00a0(1973),\u00a0The Fantasticks<\/em>\u00a0(1973),\u00a0Man of La Mancha<\/em>\u00a0(1975),\u00a0I Do! I Do!<\/em>\u00a0(1975),\u00a0Fiddler on the Roof<\/em>\u00a0(1977),\u00a0Kiss Me Kate<\/em>\u00a0(1977),\u00a0The Mikado<\/em>\u00a0(1978),\u00a0Damn Yankees<\/em>\u00a0(1979),\u00a0Cowardy Custard<\/em>\u00a0(1980), and\u00a0Godspell<\/em>\u00a0(1984).<\/p>\n

Although the department produced\u00a0Godspell<\/em>\u00a0in 1976 in the Stepan Center on the Notre Dame campus, the last departmental musical in Washington Hall was\u00a0The Medium<\/em>\u00a0in 1966 directed by Fred Syburg, in whose memory we have dedicated this 2013-2014 theatre season. In his long and illustrious career at Notre Dame, Fred directed\u00a0The Threepenny Opera<\/em>\u00a0(1965) and\u00a0The Beggar\u2019s Opera<\/em>\u00a0(1974) and held artistic, technical, and administrative roles in departmental productions in Washington Hall of\u00a0Seventeen<\/em>\u00a0(1955),\u00a0Finian\u2019s Rainbow<\/em>\u00a0(1956),\u00a0Good News<\/em>\u00a0(1957),\u00a0Oklahoma!<\/em>\u00a0(1958),\u00a0A Hatful of Rain<\/em>\u00a0(1958),\u00a0The Boy Friend<\/em>\u00a0(1959),\u00a0Babes in Arms<\/em>\u00a0(1961),\u00a0South Pacific<\/em>\u00a0(1962),\u00a0The Fantasticks<\/em>\u00a0(1963), and\u00a0My Fair Lady<\/em>\u00a0(1964).<\/p>\n

Note:<\/strong>\u00a0This is the premiere production at Notre Dame of Bruce Norris’s 2011 Pulitzer Prize winning play which debuted at Playwrights Horizons Theater in New York City in February 2010. Other recent productions of Pulitzer Prize winning plays in FTT’s mainstage season include Wendy Wasserstein’s\u00a0The Heidi Chronicles<\/em>\u00a0(February 1993), Paula Vogel’s\u00a0How I Learned to Drive<\/em>\u00a0(November 2002), and David Auburn’s\u00a0Proof<\/em>\u00a0(February 2011).\u00a0Clybourne Park<\/em>\u00a0owes its plot line, of course, to Lorraine Hansberry’s,\u00a0A Raisin in the Sun<\/em>\u00a0(1959), which was most recently produced by the Department in Washington Hall in February 1994. The 1972 Notre Dame yearbook, the\u00a0Dome<\/em>, cryptically suggests a production, probably by a touring company, and in 1984 notes that Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis read scenes from\u00a0A Raisin in the Sun<\/em>\u00a0for Notre Dame’s Black Cultural Arts Festival.<\/p>\n
