{"id":2653,"date":"2013-11-14T12:04:36","date_gmt":"2013-11-14T17:04:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/thecc\/?p=2653"},"modified":"2013-11-18T14:22:38","modified_gmt":"2013-11-18T19:22:38","slug":"2653","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/thecc\/2013\/11\/14\/2653\/","title":{"rendered":"Dioceses and lay groups survey Catholics on issues of family life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week Brian Starks\u00a0<a title=\"discussed\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/thecc\/2013\/11\/01\/does-pope-francis-heart-survey-research\/\">discussed<\/a> the Vatican\u2019s interest in lay input concerning pastoral challenges facing the family in preparation for the 2014 extraordinary synod on \u201cthe pastoral challenges for the family in the context of evangelization.\u201d Since then, the Vatican\u2019s announcement has been widely discussed in both the secular\u00a0and Catholic media outlets with great interest. \u00a0The news has also led to discussions in the Catholic blogosphere over what exactly the Vatican questionnaire means and how Catholics are to interpret it (see\u00a0<a title=\"here\" href=\"http:\/\/ncronline.org\/news\/theology\/no-consensus-meaning-vatican-synod-questionnaire\">here<\/a> and <a title=\"here\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/daily-news\/vatican-collecting-diocesan-data-not-lay-opinions-in-worldwide-survey\">here<\/a>\u00a0for two takes on the questionnaire).\u00a0 For those interested in reading the preparatory document for the synod, it is also now posted on the Vatican\u2019s <a title=\"website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/roman_curia\/synod\/documents\/rc_synod_doc_20131105_iii-assemblea-sinodo-vescovi_en.html\">website<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0It discusses the reasons for the synod and ends with 38 questions pertaining to how Church teaching on marriage and family is understood by Catholics in one&#8217;s diocese and how pastoral care regarding certain family issues is addressed.<\/p>\n<p>Since the announcement that the Vatican is interested in lay input regarding these questions, many have wondered how such data would be collected.\u00a0 While the Catholic Bishops\u2019 Conference for England and Wales (CBCEW) have created an online <a title=\"survey\" href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/s.aspx?sm=28hu%2fJ2JI4%2fLljHhhQ%2b7btPhJ7Sl5dGuwh4BDJBRJug%3d\">survey<\/a>, according to the National Catholic Register the USCCB has <a title=\"noted\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/daily-news\/vatican-collecting-diocesan-data-not-lay-opinions-in-worldwide-survey\/\">noted<\/a> that the survey is being handled at the diocesan level, and that \u201ceach bishop determines what is the most useful and reasonable manner of consultation to assist him in preparing his report for the Vatican.\u201d \u00a0At least one diocese, the Diocese of Rockford, has created a <a title=\"way\" href=\"http:\/\/observer.rockforddiocese.org\/article?id=334\">way <\/a>for individual Catholics to respond to the Vatican questionnaire. \u00a0Nonetheless, some lay Catholic groups have taken it upon themselves to create their own surveys.\u00a0 For instance, the liberal Catholic group Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good has created a survey which can be found at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.papalsurvey.com\/\">www.papalsurvey.com<\/a>.\u00a0 Likewise, Catholic Organizations for Renewal (COR), a collation of liberal Catholic groups (e.g., Call to Action, DignityUSA, FutureChurch, and Women\u2019s Ordination Conference), have put together a <a title=\"survey\" href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/s\/SynodOnFamilyUS\">survey<\/a> titled \u201cThe Extraordinary Synod on the Family 2014: A parish-level survey for US Catholics,\u201d which mirrors the format used by the CBCEW.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It is interesting to compare the above two surveys created by the lay organizations with the questions listed on the Vatican website.\u00a0 Some noticeable differences exist, for instance on the topic of homosexuality and the term &#8220;marriage equality&#8221; employed by COR.\u00a0 Below, you can compare the questions provided by the Vatican and the survey by Catholic Organizations for Renewal (COR). \u00a0Important to note, COR does say in its survey description that &#8220;questions marked with * have been added for additional information, and were not part of the original Bishops&#8217; survey.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With at least two surveys by lay organizations in existence, it will be interesting to see if more groups come up with their own questions related to family life in the coming months.<\/p>\n<p>Some questions readers of the Catholic Conversation might consider:<br \/>\n1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Has your diocese and\/or parish talked about the upcoming synod and asked for lay input on \u201cthe pastoral challenges for the family in the context of evangelization.\u201d<br \/>\n2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What do you think is the best way for dioceses to collect information on pastoral challenges facing families?<br \/>\n3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Are you aware of how you might contact your diocese?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Survey questions regarding homosexuality<\/span><br \/>\nQuestions on Vatican website:<\/p>\n<p>5. On Unions of Persons of the Same Sex<br \/>\na) Is there a law in your country recognizing civil unions for people of the same-sex and equating it in some way to marriage?<br \/>\nb) What is the attitude of the local and particular Churches towards both the State as the promoter of civil unions between persons of the same sex and the people involved in this type of union?<br \/>\nc) What pastoral attention can be given to people who have chosen to live in these types of union?<br \/>\nd) In the case of unions of persons of the same sex who have adopted children, what can be done pastorally in light of transmitting the faith?<\/p>\n<p>Catholic Organizations for Renewal (COR) questions:<\/p>\n<p>29.
