{"id":320,"date":"2020-07-11T17:34:38","date_gmt":"2020-07-11T21:34:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/truth-and-politics\/?page_id=320"},"modified":"2020-08-15T11:06:25","modified_gmt":"2020-08-15T15:06:25","slug":"requirements","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/truth-and-politics\/requirements\/","title":{"rendered":"Requirements"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>HEALTH COMES FIRST<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>COVID HEALTH PROTOCOLS:\u00a0 <\/strong>In this class, as elsewhere on campus, you must comply with all University health and safety protocols below.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Face masks that completely cover the nose and mouth will be worn by all students and instructors;<\/li>\n<li>Physical distancing will be maintained in all instructional spaces;<\/li>\n<li>Students will sit in assigned seats throughout the semester, which will be documented by faculty for purposes of any needed contact tracing; and<\/li>\n<li>Protocols for staged entry to and exit from classrooms and instructional spaces will be followed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We are part of a community of learning in which compassionate care for one another is part of our spiritual and social charter. Consequently, compliance with these protocols is an expectation for everyone enrolled in this course. If a student refuses to comply with the University\u2019s health and safety protocols, the student must leave the classroom and will earn an unexcused absence for the class period and any associated assignments\/assessments for the day. We&#8217;re not only reading a few books.\u00a0 One of the main reasons I only use web-based syllabi is to save you $$$.\u00a0 For this reason, you will find the majority of your readings on this Syllabus.\u00a0 (Many of these articles were identified by my superb research assistant, Steven Higgins ND &#8217;20,\u00a0 who will undoubtedly feel bad if you don&#8217;t savor all of them). I will also provide you with hand-outs.\u00a0 You must read everything.<\/p>\n<p>Our class discussions will only work well if you have these readings physically in front of you. \u00a0Therefore, please remember these rules: \u00a01) Copy and print all of the readings on this site that are marked PRINT (otherwise, you do not need to copy them&#8212;but I will assume that you have READ them. Should there be a quiz?); \u00a02) Bring each required reading to class on the day we are scheduled to discuss it.<\/p>\n<p>Please do not use Kindles, Laptops, I-Phones, or similar electronic devices in our seminar.\u00a0 In particular, any use of Zoom will interfere with my Zoom communications with your classmates.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Other Media<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I love to look at things.\u00a0 We will watch some films and TV series.\u00a0 I have included other types of media on the Course Syllabus. \u00a0I encourage you to use visual and audio media when you lead class discussions.\u00a0 Please send me the relevant photos and links beforehand, and I will post them on this Syllabus.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Class Visits<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The age of the Corona virus has encouraged me to arrange virtual visits by distinguished speakers. We will host several guest visitors this semester, including at least two Notre Dame alums.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Discussions<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>I also love discussions. All of our class sessions will be based on discussion. I will give no lectures.\u00a0 Each of you will have the honor of serving as a discussion leader several times during the semester.\u00a0 To the extent that I am able, I will resist the\u00a0 temptation to monopolize discussion.\u00a0 Your challenge, if you will accept it, is to restrain me if I fail.\u00a0 By the end of our class, you should not need me at all!<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Grading<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>It is a special privilege to take a seminar. \u00a0You should treat our seminar accordingly. \u00a0Seminars are small and they allow for intimate and lively discussions. \u00a0They also provide me with the pleasant opportunity to work closely with each of you as\u00a0<em>individuals<\/em>. \u00a0My aspirations are modest. \u00a0If I can enhance your ability to speak, read, write, think critically, and persuade, I shall be pleased. \u00a0These objectives are reflected in the breakdown of my grading standard.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Participation and Short Assignments (35%)<\/li>\n<li>Two Reflective Essays (15% each)<\/li>\n<li>Semester Essay (35%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Paper assignments will be docked 1\/3 of a letter grade for each day they are late. \u00a0To receive a passing grade in this class, you\u00a0<em>must<\/em>\u00a0visit me during my virtual office hours at least one time this semester.\u00a0 Please do not make me sweat over your ability to live up to this arduous requirement.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Attendance<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Class attendance is\u00a0<strong>MANDATORY<\/strong>. \u00a0Unless you are ill, you must consult with me beforehand if you know you will miss a class. \u00a0If you are ill, please send me an email so that I do not worry about you. \u00a0University-approved absences are fine, but please tell me beforehand if you will be gone.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>H<\/strong><strong>onor Code<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>This seminar is based upon communication. \u00a0Therefore, I welcome all of the conversations you have with each other, inside or outside class. \u00a0You are perfectly welcome to discuss your readings and writing assignments with each other (<i>with the exception of your final essay<\/i>). \u00a0In fact, I encourage it. However, every writing assignment you turn in to me must be clearly, unmistakably, and unequivocally your own work!<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Office Hours<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>I enjoy meeting with all of my students, and I hope to see each of you on a regular basis.\u00a0 Due the Coronavirus, I will (reluctantly) hold all of my office hours over Zoom.
