{"id":62,"date":"2019-08-09T22:51:54","date_gmt":"2019-08-10T02:51:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/world-politics-fall-2019\/?page_id=62"},"modified":"2019-11-21T13:45:06","modified_gmt":"2019-11-21T17:45:06","slug":"leninism","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/world-politics-fall-2019\/leninism\/","title":{"rendered":"Post-Colonialism"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"posttitle\">\n<p><strong>PART IV<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this section of our course, I will address the dilemmas of building <strong><em>Nation-states<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in the\u00a0<strong><em>Post-Colonial World<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>One of the major challenges I face is that it is so difficult to nail down that portion of the world that is not \u201cliberal\u201d (what we used to call the First World) or \u201cLeninist\u201d (old Second World). \u00a0There is a good reason why this is so.\u00a0 What we often refer to as the \u201cdeveloping world\u201d or the \u201cThird World\u201d is a vast array of different types of countries and civilizations. \u00a0On the one hand, Americans tend to forget that there are <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-220\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/world-politics-fall-2019\/files\/2019\/08\/Banksy_Monet.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/world-politics-fall-2019\/files\/2019\/08\/Banksy_Monet.jpg 557w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/world-politics-fall-2019\/files\/2019\/08\/Banksy_Monet-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/world-politics-fall-2019\/files\/2019\/08\/Banksy_Monet-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 85vw, 450px\" \/>highly developed states outside of the western world.\u00a0 On the other hand, there are fantastically poor states, such as Chad and Sudan.\u00a0 In this sense, there is no unified entity we can call the &#8220;Third World.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>My solution to this challenge is to focus on a specific category of states that have at least one thing in common:\u00a0 the experience of having been colonies of European powers. \u00a0This approach has a notable benefit. \u00a0Many of the major crises in the world today are at least partly due to the experience of European colonialism.\u00a0 These countries include Iraq and Afghanistan&#8212;both places our government is desperate to leave.\u00a0 We are now leaving Syria, and the consequences our former allies, the Kurds&#8211;another group once victimized by colonialism&#8211;will be severe.<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\n29. \u00a0LECTURE:\u00a0 <em>Wednesday, November 6<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Initial reflections on the contradictions\u00a0between\u00a0\u00a0two ideal types: tradition and modernity<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Today\u2019s Assumption<\/em>:\u00a0 People in the West frequently denigrate the inhabitants of more traditional cultures.\u00a0 Yet, the norms and institutions of traditional society\u00a0are as rational as those of modern society.<\/p>\n<p>A good example of \u00a0liberal democracy\u2019s problem with the expression of traditional ways of acting is the French practice of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/La%C3%AFcit%C3%A9\">Laicit\u00e9<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Angelique Chrisafis,\u00a0\u201cFrance\u2019s Headscarf Rule,\u201d\u00a0<em>The Guardian<\/em>,\u201d July 2013 \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2013\/jul\/22\/frances-headscarf-war-attack-on-freedom\">PRINT AND READ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yet despite the West\u2019s assumption that its societies are governed purely by formal rules of order,\u00a0supposedly traditional practices, like political corruption, play an undeniable part in\u00a0<strong>liberal-democratic<\/strong>\u00a0societies, too.\u00a0 See\u00a0Glen Thrush, \u201cIf I\u2019m corrupt, it\u2019s because I take care of my district\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<a title=\"If I'm corrupt....\" href=\"http:\/\/www.post-gazette.com\/pg\/09088\/959114-455.stm\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">READ<\/a> (Until his death in 2010, John Murtha, the subject of this article, had been the longest serving representative in the House of Representatives.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>30.
