{"id":797,"date":"2012-04-29T13:19:31","date_gmt":"2012-04-29T17:19:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nd.edu\/yankswatchingtelly\/?p=797"},"modified":"2012-04-29T13:27:01","modified_gmt":"2012-04-29T17:27:01","slug":"shamelessly-eccentric-and-dirty-but-isnt-that-why-we-love-british-tv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/yankswatchingtelly\/?p=797","title":{"rendered":"Shamelessly Eccentric and Dirty, But Isn&#8217;t That Why We Love British TV?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here it is, kids. \u00a0<em>Shameless<\/em>\u00a0Season 1 Episode 2 in its entirety on youtube for your enjoyment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iE73fUj8aGs\">http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iE73fUj8aGs<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And isn&#8217;t it wonderful that you can just type it into the search bar, and it&#8217;s there? \u00a0You wouldn&#8217;t find that with most, if not all, US shows, but UK television seems to be a little more inclusive to its audience. \u00a0UK shows <em>want <\/em>to be watched, want to include us, want to draw us in to their weird worlds and say, &#8220;Hey, this is weird and slightly depraved, but we like it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And isn&#8217;t that the idea of <em>Shameless<\/em>? This &#8220;lower-class&#8221; family whose house is always a mess, they fight, they argue, they have sex on the kitchen floor. \u00a0But in the end, the kids all band together as a loving family that takes care of each other. \u00a0The ending scene of the first episode is of all of them around the table eating together, and it&#8217;s lovely.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.webmastertalkforums.com\/attachments\/localized\/3124_shameless.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"335\" height=\"378\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The kids in <em>Shameless<\/em>\u00a0deal with things with wit and humor, much like many of Britain&#8217;s television shows. \u00a0They take a terrible situation and make jokes in the wonderful, self-deprecating way that British comedy is able to make fun of itself and the problems of its country. \u00a0<em>Shameless <\/em>should be a depressing drama, what with the children&#8217;s abandonment and the massive issues of the father. \u00a0But it isn&#8217;t &#8211; it&#8217;s light and fun and dirty. \u00a0And in episode 2 when Frank disappears after a huge drunken fight with the family, they don&#8217;t write him off &#8211; they go searching for him. \u00a0Because no matter what he&#8217;s done, he&#8217;s still part of the family. \u00a0They welcome him home with flags and cheers, (much to his dismay and embarrassment).<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a scene in Episode 2 in which Fiona and Steve think that the police are fishing Frank&#8217;s dead body out of the river, but it turns out to be a police PR stunt. \u00a0Fiona&#8217;s emotion at thinking her abusive father is dead is heartbreaking, but the show throws it aside and makes a joke. \u00a0And that, I think, is what British TV does best &#8211; gives us genuine emotion for a split second, and then cuts in with a witty, slightly\u00a0inappropriate\u00a0joke. \u00a0And that makes for simply great TV.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here it is, kids. \u00a0Shameless\u00a0Season 1 Episode 2 in its entirety on youtube for your enjoyment. http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iE73fUj8aGs And isn&#8217;t it wonderful that you can just type it into the search bar, and it&#8217;s there? \u00a0You wouldn&#8217;t find that with most, &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/yankswatchingtelly\/?p=797\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":586,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-797","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/yankswatchingtelly\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/797","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/yankswatchingtelly\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/yankswatchingtelly\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/yankswatchingtelly\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/586"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/yankswatchingtelly\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=797"}],"version-history":[{"count":4,"href":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/yankswatchingtelly\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/797\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":799,"href":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/yankswatchingtelly\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/797\/revisions\/799"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/yankswatchingtelly\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=797"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/yankswatchingtelly\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=797"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sites.nd.edu\/yankswatchingtelly\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=797"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
