Over the decades, I have routinely used photos as teaching tools in my courses. They reflect the subjects–politics, religion, history, culture–that interest me most. My goal is to provoke my students to think concretely about real events and real people. Because I am particularly interested in current and former dictatorships and war zones, many of the images are of sites that would be of little interest to tourists. Nonetheless, some of the most obscure photos–of houses, museums, schools, churches, memorials, political posters, and other expressions of human creation– have immense historical significance. I invite country scholars to identify these sites in particular.
The majority of the gallery photos are based upon my travels over the past 40 years . Naturally, the quality of the digital photographs is better than the photos taken years ago with an actual camera.
