About

Welcome to the Balfour-Hesburgh Scholars Program website.

The Balfour-Hesburgh Scholars Program (BHSP) provides high-achieving students from underrepresented populations, including, but not limited to, those from low-income backgrounds and/or under-resourced high schools, or who may be the first in their family to attend college, with a close-knit learning community of current students at Notre Dame.

Balfour Scholars (referred to as Balfours) come in the summer after high school graduation to partake in the Summer Institute. After the 4-week Summer Institute they take a weekly 1-credit course in the Fall semester that engages them in the three pillars of the BHSP: leadership, intellectual engagement, and commitment to service.

Throughout their undergraduate years Balfours are eligible to receive funding for academic, research, leadership, and career pursuits. Some of the things we’ve funded include:

  • LSAT/MCAT prep
  • Flights for study abroad/networking events/research conference
  • Supplemental funding for thesis research
  • Equipment for classes
  • Summer classes tuition
  • Housing for unpaid internships
