Service Immersion

Join in a life-changing 6-week experience that combines intellectual engagement, service, and leadership. It begins with a 1-credit course in the spring semester, grounding scholars in critical immigration issues and preparing them to work with young people in migrant farm communities.

Program Activities Include:

  • Engagement with Farm Workers: Learn about the challenges faced by farm workers.
  • Tour of Homestead: Discover the work of the Mexican-American Council (MAC).
  • Cuban Cultural Immersion: Explore Calle Ocho and its significance through readings and experiences.
  • Operation Pedro Pan: Visit the American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora and hear stories from a Pedro Pan child.
  • Guest Speaker: Engage in a discussion with esteemed Univision journalist Jorge Ramos.
  • Community Outreach: Interact with students from Miami Community Charter Schools about college aspirations.
  • Art and Culture: Visit Miami’s Wynwood art district.
  • Film Screening: Watch In The Heights to reflect on cultural narratives.
  • Recreation: Enjoy a cool day at Oleta State Park beach.
  • Daily Reflection: Engage in personal reflections throughout the week.
  • Culinary Experiences: Savor local dishes such as arepas, bistec, ceviche, and more.
  • Beverage Tasting: Drink traditional Cuban coffee and homemade juices.
Six-Week Mentorship Program:

Weekly Activities (Monday – Thursday)

  • Mentoring High School Students: Work with MAC’s College Career Prep program.
  • Workshops Include:
    • Applying for scholarships
    • Understanding credit cards and credit scores
    • Exploring fly-in and study abroad programs
    • Scheduling college classes
    • Crafting professional emails
    • Budget management
    • Practicing breathing exercises for stress relief
Support for Mexican-American Council:
  • Daily Operations: Assist with breakfast and lunch distribution.
  • Field Trips: Participate in excursions to the Everglades Refuge, the University of Florida’s Horticultural Center, and attend an Inter Miami game.
  • Story Sharing: Create a safe space for students to open up and share their personal stories.
  • Inspiration: Motivate students to pursue higher education and encourage them to dream bigger.
Weekend Activities:
  • Weekly Reflection: Each student leads a reflection session.
  • Final Projects: Collaborate on culminating projects.
  • Exploration: Discover the beaches, restaurants, parks, and nightlife of Miami-Dade County.
  • Florida Keys Adventure: Enjoy a trip featuring parasailing, kayaking, and jet skiing.
