The University of California, Irvine School of Law invites applications for the position of Mysun Foundation Clinical Fellow in its Environmental Law Clinic (ELC). The fellowship is designed to provide an attorney who has a strong interest in environmental justice with mentorship to help the attorney to launch a career in clinical teaching, or serve as a bridge to a career in public interest environmental justice work.

The Mysun Foundation Clinical Fellow will work under the direct supervision of the ELC director. Working with the Director, the Mysun Foundation Clinical Fellow will mentor and work closely with students in the representation of disenfranchised and marginalized communities, and will participate in program development including community lawyering and outreach. The Mysun Foundation Clinical Fellow will also have opportunities for teaching within the ELC, including assisting with the teaching of the ELC seminar.

The Mysun Foundation Clinical Fellow is expected to be a vital part not only of the ELC, but also of the UCI Clinical Law Program, and the law school’s intellectual life more generally. As such, the Mysun Foundation Clinical Fellow will receive mentoring, and can expect support in terms of career development.

UCI Law is currently working from remotely, and will conduct its interviews remotely.

ABA Student Writing Competition on Forest Law

The ABA’s Section on Energy, Environment, and Resources is sponsoring a law student writing competition. First prize is $1,000 and publication by the ABA. Entries for the competition must not exceed 20 pages and should demonstrate original thought on a question of legal and/or policy significance relating to the topic of forest law. Institute for Energy Law: Oil and Gas Workshop for Young Lawyers

Law students can register for this event for only $25! Takes place virtually on Feb 3-4. Great networking opportunity, especially if you plan to practice in Texas.

An evolution of IEL’s previous Young Litigators and Doing Deals conferences, the Workshop features transactional and litigation topics designed for attorneys in their first ten years of practice, or those new to oil and gas matters. Spread over two days, each day begins with a more general topic and then features topics on day one that are more transactional focused and on day two more litigation focused. The Workshop also features a social event and an interactive discussion on how young professionals can advance diversity, equity and inclusion.

Climate Law Fellowship at the Sabin Center at Columbia Law

The Sabin Center for Climate Change Law seeks a Climate Law Fellow for a one-year appointment. The Fellow will conduct independent research, literature reviews, and benchmarking studies on a wide variety of issues related to Climate Change Law, as well as develop and implement advocacy strategies. The Fellow will also work on a wide variety of research and writing projects concerning climate change mitigation and adaptation; contribute to advocacy-oriented programs and projects; help organize conferences, seminars, and collaborative publications; contribute to conceptualization, management and implementation of the Center’s web resources; and assist with oversight of interns and volunteers, among other projects. Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation – free student memberships

The Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation is a collaborative, educational, non-profit organization dedicated to the scholarly and practical study of the laws and regulations relating to oil and gas, mining, energy, public lands, water, environmental and international law. Through its educational programs, the Foundation brings together lawyers, landmen, managers, consultants, government personnel, law faculty, students, and others involved in minerals, oil and gas, water, and other resources. Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation – Equity & Inclusion Scholarship

The Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation has established a new Equity and Inclusion Scholarship in 2020. It will be awarded to one or two JD applicants who meet the general scholarship criteria and who identify as either Black or Indigenous. To be eligible for this scholarship, a student must be enrolled full time at an accredited law school. A student must demonstrate serious and diligent pursuit of academic achievement. Other criteria include leadership ability, year in law school, and financial need. Details here.

Legal Fellow Position at NYU’s Center for Policy Integrity

The Institute for Policy Integrity at NYU School of Law is hiring legal fellows to start in 2021. The fellowship is designed to be a two-year position, though it can be structured as a one-year position pre-clerkship. The Institute is looking for highly qualified graduates with 0-3 years of experience post-JD and an interest in environmental and climate change law, environmental justice, administrative law, and regulatory policy. DOJ Honors Program – Environment & Natural Resources Division

The Attorney General’s Honors Program is Justice’s competitive, centralized recruitment program that is the only way for new attorneys (i.e., third-year law students and students who enter judicial clerkships, graduate law programs, or qualifying fellowships within 9 months of law school graduation) to enter Justice in an attorney position.

Attorneys in the Environment and Natural Resources Division can expect to become intimately and immediately involved in a wide variety of environmental litigation, personally handle settlement negotiations, travel across the country taking depositions and negotiating consent decrees, and assist senior attorneys in major cases.

Haub Law Environmental Law & Policy Hack Competition

The deadline to register for the first annual Elisabeth Haub School of Law Environmental Law & Policy Hack Competition is September 1, 2020, and team proposals are due on October 1, 2020.

The final round judges will include Prof. Shelby Green (Haub Law) and Prof. Julie Cheslik (UMKC Law School). The three finalist teams will present via Zoom on Friday, November 13 beginning at 1:00 p.m. (Eastern).  

The competition seeks to help students recognize and develop the connections between law and policy; catalyze the conceptualization and implementation of creative and thoughtful solutions to pressing environmental problems; encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and community engagement; and further Haub Law’s commitment to advancing environmental protection through student-centered policy development and implementation.  The updated official competition rules and inaugural problem are attached and available at website.

Midwest Environmental Advocates – legal fellowships

Midwest Environmental Advocates, which uses litigation, community organizing,and advocacy to fight for clean air, water, and open government in Wisconsin, is now accepting applications for candidates interested in seeking post-graduate legal fellowships funded through a law school or other sources to commence in the fall of 2021, although an earlier fellowship start date will be considered.
