Looking at IPEDS Starter Reports

Did you know you have the ability to see how Notre Dame is doing in comparison to other higher education institutions via IPEDS datasources available on dataND?

The Office of Strategic Planning & Institutional Research (OSPIR) submits Notre Dame data to the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) on several topics each year. Once released from IPEDS, OSPIR downloads and processes the data for peer comparison analyses. If you are interested in exploring this data, you can use the new dataND Starter Reports to examine it on your own. Below are a few we recommend to get you started, but feel free to explore more:

Be sure to click “Open Starter Report” to launch the report.

Starter Reports utilize the Tableau web interface. If you aren’t familiar and would like more information on how to interact with these reports, please contact the Enterprise Data & Analytics team.

Tableau Data Sources (renamed on dataND)

What was formerly known as “Datasets” has been renamed to “Tableau Data Sources” in order to more authentically describe what they are. Tableau Data Sources are large, pre-built collections of related data ready for report building. Data Sources are handy for Tableau Desktop users since you can connect directly to the Data Source to create your own reports and visualizations from scratch. Not a Tableau Desktop user? Check out information on the new Starter Reports below.

New! Common Datasets

We’re making it easier for you to connect to the data you need. Datasets are commonly requested lists of data that are lightweight and easily joined with other data. Do you need a list of buildings on campus so you can combine it with your data on tree species? Or perhaps you need a list of active faculty so you can join your spreadsheet of the number of cookies each department baked in the annual bake-off. These datasets are the lists you need.

Simply find the dataset you need, download it to either Excel or Tableau Desktop, or copy and use the provided SQL, and you’re on your way to more easily joining your data with commonly requested campus data than ever before.

Responsible Use Certification Expiration Notices

All users who log into dataND for the very first time are required to complete the “Certification of Awareness of the Responsible Use of Data & Information Technology Resources”. This certification must be renewed every 5 years.

When your certification is a week away from expiring, dataND will send you an email directing you on where to renew. The re-certification takes about 10 minutes to complete.
