Chapter 19: Sound Waves

Exercises: 7, 9, 10, 19, 20, 21, 23, 24, 25*, 30, 31*, 40, 44, 46, 49
Problems: 2, 5, 6*, 9*, 10*, 11, 12, 13*, 17*, 18, 19*, 21, 22*

I wasn’t able to update the blog recently, so these post are a bit behind. Chapter 19 was the goal to finish this past Friday. Among these we went through E19-25, E19-30, and E19-31 on the board, as well as P19-6, P19-9, and P19-17.

Chapter 18: Wave Motion

Exercises: 12, 14, 19, 29, 31, 33*, 34*
Problems: 3, 7, 8*, 9*, 10**, 13, 14*, 15*, 19*, 22*

In addition to the problems mentioned in the previous post, we also worked out exercises 36, 39, and 51 from Ch 17 on the board.

Chapter 17: Oscillations

Exercises: 11, 15, 16, 17*, 29*, 36*, 38, 39***, 51
Problems: 3, 5, 6, 7, 8**, 11, 13*, 15*, 17*, 18*, 21, 23*

There’ll be two posts today because of us being behind due to Memorial Day. We finished up with the Chapter 16 problems today. We worked out problems 5 and 8 from (16) on the board. The issues were mostly in regard to when/where it is appropriate to apply the bernoulli equation.

The above problem set should be worked through in addition to the problems from Chapter 18 in the next blog post.

Chapter 16: Fluid Dynamics

Exercises: 3, 7, 9, 13*, 14*, 16*, 18, 19*, 21*, 23
Problems: 3*, 4*, 5*, 6*, 8, 11*, 12, 14*, 15*

We continued and finished working out the exercises and problems from Chapter 15. We did E15-35, P15-7, and P15-9 on the board. This lead us to a brief conversation about dynamics.

We need to work out the above exercise/problem set and ideally start into Chapter 17.

Chapter 15: Fluid Statics

Exercises: 11, 12, 13, 16*, 17, 19, 25, 27, 29, 35, 36

Problems: 1, 3*, 4, 5, 7, 9*, 12*, 17, 19*, 21*

Today we had introductions and discussed the format of the course. We briefly reviewed the physics of the buoyancy force and pressure. We worked through several of the exercises and worked out 16(b) and 17 on the chalk board together.

We should try to work through the rest of the problems for next time as well as exercises (as much as possible) from Chapter 16 before tomorrow morning.

Note: Memorial Day has put us off by a day which we will try to make up over the next few weeks by rearranging some of the problem/exercise sets.

Welcome

This blog is a central location for commentary and discussion of the Review of Fundamental Physics 1-2 summer courses. Each class day I will create a new post as a prompt for discussion with the section(s) for that day. This website is an experimental project and the first of its kind. While it’s the case the some of us are currently present on campus for the review course and will likely engage with one another face-to-face, this medium will help those who cannot.

Please feel free to use this site however seems most natural and we’ll see how it evolves.

Cheers.

Edit: PEP is just a witty play on Preliminary Exam Preparation from the ND Physics webpage on the matter.
