Sarah Martin, Curator of Education and Dalila Huerta, Assistant Curator of Education at the Snite Museum of Art held a lesson developed around artist Josef Albers (German-American, 1888–1976) a 20th century post-painterly abstraction and Op Art artist. The Snite have three of Albers painting on view including: Homage to the Square-Compliant. The Homage to the Square series was based on mathematically determined format of several squares. This hands-on exercise allowed the students to study Alber’s central concept of contrasting effects of many color theory but also form and texture. After a discussion about controlled colors paired with variant colors, campers were given different colored paper squares to experiment with.
