There are three main branches to the tree of life: eukaryotes, bacteria, and archaea. Eukaroytes are cells with a nucleus. Archaea and bacteria are single celled organisms without a nucleus. Archaea and bacteria are much more diverse and prevalent than eukaryotes. It is believed that the oldest life-forms were probably hyperthermophiles that resemble some archaea today.
