For students entering the program with non-EAC/ABET-accredited undergraduate degrees who are targeting careers requiring professional engineering (PE) registration, it’s important that you review the NCEES education standards and credentials evaluations process. Students who are determined by NCEES to have deficiencies in their early-level college courses can often remediate the deficiencies by taking CLEP exams.

Other pathways to meet educational requirements for PE registration are available but vary by state. Some states provide alternative lists of courses for aspiring PEs who do not have EAC/ABET-accredited degrees including Indiana. Some states alter the number of years of experience required to register to become a PE for those with non-EAC/ABET-accredited degrees including California. Some states recognize the MEng degree as satisfying educational requirements for PE registration provided that the MEng is from a school that has an ABET-accredited undergraduate program in the same discipline as the MEng degree including Washington. Note that the Notre Dame MEng program is housed in a department with two ABET-accredited undergraduate degrees.

We encourage all students targeting future PE registration to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam as soon as possible, including prior to matriculating to the Notre Dame MEng. Note that Indiana has adopted an automatic approval model to register for the FE exam.
