History

SHPE was officially formed in 1974 by Rodrigo “Rod” Garcia, who working as a civil engineer for the City of Los Angeles. He gathered a cohort of fellow Hispanic engineers who shared his concerns, and they held a meeting in his garage to determine how they could contribute to diversifying the STEM field. What was, back then, a small group of leaders has now grown into a nationwide professional association. SHPE has more than 11,000 members, runs 375 college and university chapters, and is coming up on 50 years at work.

SHPE @ ND

The goal of SHPE at Notre Dame is to provide students of Hispanic or Latinx ethnicities with not only the opportunity to give back to our community by engaging local students in STEM, but also by receiving various opportunities themselves through our National Covention. Through SHPE chapters across the nation, we are able to communicate with and meet students across the country to foster and expand the Hispanic community of professional engineers.
