Current Projects

Myoelectric Hand Project

Team Leads: Julia Descalzi & Sam Sanchez

The Myoelectric Hand project updates an existing prosthetic hand to improve its actuation, human-machine interface, power systems, and motion capabilities. Team members refine hand mechanics, optimize sensor signal processing, and expand functional dexterity for enhanced user control. Joining this project requires an additional application process beyond standard team placement.

Myoelectric R&D

Team Leads: Kolbe Schlosser & Kevin Fox

The Myoelectric R&D team focuses on the rapid iteration and development of a myoelectrically activated prosthetic hand. This project has no specific end-user. Members have the creative freedom to explore topics that interest them, such as testing multiple sensors and optimizing sensor placement strategies. Joining this team requires an additional application process.

Team Sadie

Team Leads: Canta Litanto & Eduardo Coronado Garcia

Team Sadie is developing an adaptive assistive device designed to help a former user perform planks and push-ups. The team designed, 3D printed, and molded an initial terminal device prototype using Ecoflex 0030 silicone, which has been sent to the user for testing and feedback to guide further design iterations.

One-Handed Keyboard Team

Team Leads: Evan McCormick & Simon Yan

The One-Handed Keyboard team is designing a custom keyboard to improve typing speeds for a middle school student. The project involves CAD redesigns based on user feedback, along with connecting PCB boards and integrating firmware code.

Team Carson

Team Leads: Kari Pendegraft & Catherine Hubbard

Team Carson is designing an assisted living device that provides a young adult with autism spectrum disorder the autonomy and independence to complete daily routines by himself (shower, brushing teeth, etc.) using visual and auditory cues and instruction. We need assistance with electronics control system (raspberry pi, LED lighting, speakers, screen), app design, digital design/art (visual cues and overall customizing the design of the system, mechanical design, and waterproofing.

Team Wu

Team Leads: Cecilia Savard & Amanda Rohde

Team Wu (Writing) is developing a prosthetic hand and arm for a child with limb difference and limited mobility in both arms. Building on prior work creating a writing device for the user, the team is now transitioning to designing and building a full prosthetic device from the ground up.

Team Bike / Hand

Team Lead: Sofia Hutchens

The Bike / Hand team is designing an adapted bike or prosthetic hand for an active 3-year-old child. The team met with his family at User Day last year!

Team Julius

Team Leads: Colby DeShetler & Eric Reinhart

Team Julius is designing a hand for an athletic 11-year-old boy to enhance his participation in various sports. The team is focused on enabling activities such as riding a bike, catching a football, hitting a baseball, and shooting a basketball.

Team Beacon

Team Leads: Paddy Bass & Bennett Derico

Team Beacon is reverse engineering medical equipment into children’s toys to help kids better understand the devices used during hospital stays. As a new project team, potential designs include 3D-printed wheelchairs, toy syringes, ventilators, walkers, and other medical equipment models.
