While at first glance this seems like this new trend will hurt cable companies in the U.S., it may actually encourage people to pay for basic cable packages. Consumers now can watch the one or two shows they like online, without paying a premium for channels they don’t need. If you can pick and choose what channels you want, it may motivate people to sign on with these cables companies. So while current customers may downsize their cable packages, these cable companies may acquire new customers as a result of the unbundling.
