Snow in April prevents the Irish from getting back on track

The Fighting Irish woke up this past Saturday to three inches of snow that unfortunately caused their three game set against Ball State to be cancelled. While the weather over the past weak has been anything but nice, the Irish hoped that it would clear up by the weekend series. This was obviously not the case, and the Irish got and extra week to prepare for their series against Purdue this coming weekend, where the weather is expected to be perfect for spring baseball.

Notre Dame cannot get past early runs by Illinois, drop 3 despite close game 2

The most exciting game of the series manifested itself in game 2 of this three game set between the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame and Illinois.

In the first of two road trips that the Irish will take this spring season, the Notre Dame bats could not catch up to the hot start that Illinois seemed to get off to in each of the three games this past weekend, April 2nd and 3rd. Game 2 saw a hard-fought match that came down to the wire, eventually being won in walk-off fashion for the home squad. Two Illinois runs answered the Irish’s two in the bottom of the seventh to seal the deal and clinch the series.

Emmett Wilmes tallied four total bases on two hits and a double with two RBIs and one run scored across the weekend series. Mike Cyrocki and Mike McMannon both turned in impressive pitching performances over six combined innings in game 2, with Cyrocki allowing 3 total runs, 2 earned, and McMannon with zero earned or unearned runs. The bats for the Irish, however, remained inconsistent, and errors, once again, reared their costly, ugly heads in this three game set. No where else was this more prevalent than in Tom Peterson’s two innings on the bump, where five runs were allowed, all of which were unearned.

The Irish look to find some consistency in their hitting and sure up their defensive play before taking on Ball State University at home this weekend, April 9th and 10th.

Irish can’t get the bats going, drop 3 to Illinois State

In the season opening series for the Irish over the weekend of March 19th and 20th, Notre Dame hosted Illinois State, a team that came into this series having already played a week’s worth of games over their spring break. That extra experience showed.

While the Irish hung in game one, costly errors across the board ended up being the culprit of three tough losses, despite solid pitching out of the gate. The full promise of the Irish bats were also on display in flashes throughout the series, and with more practice against live pitching, Notre Dame will most definitely be able to get out of a series similar to this with at least a couple of wins.

Sticking with the reliable pitching while limiting walks, cleaning up the defense behind those pitchers, and getting some consistency out of the Irish bats are the goals for Notre Dame heading into this weekend’s away series against Illinois.

Irish Wrap up Off-season Workouts with Eyes Set on Opening Day

The Fighting Irish are eager to begin their first season as members of the NCBA’s DI division. With the first series of the season less than a week away, the squad recently wrapped up a productive offseason. The core of 16 returning players led a very talented crop of new members in offseason drills. Each Saturday the team traveled out to Elkhart to work on hitting at the P3 indoor training facility. During the week, situational defense was the focus at the Loftus Sports Center. In addition to working on offense and defense, service was also a large component of the offseason regimen. Every Friday a group of players go to the Boys and Girls Club of South Bend to spend with the kids who attend the club after school. The guys played everything from basketball to freeze tag with the youngsters. The team also participated in the Pink Zone Spin-a-Thon, an event that raises money for breast cancer research. With a productive offseason under their belts, the ball club has lofty expectations heading into the season opener which will take place at home on March 19th against Illinois State.

Irish Open Season with Double-Header Sweep of Northwestern

To prepare The Fighting Irish for a difficult conference schedule, Notre Dame took on Northwestern University over the weekend.  In the first game of the doubleheader, Notre Dame won a hard fought game 8-2.  The score does not tell how close of a game it was.  Notre Dame thrived off excellent pitching and timely hitting to get the win.  In an attempt to get a lot of arms on the mound, your Fighting Irish used 6 pitchers. Among them were newcomers Dominic Nunag and Andrew Skomra.  The game was back and forth, with no team leading by more than a run.  In the top of the seventh, with the score 3-2, the Notre Dame bats came alive.  Starting with a two out single by freshman shorstop Andrew Rockamann, and timely hits by catcher Emmett Wilmes and left fielder and club baseball president Mike Cyrocki, Notre Dame amassed five insurance runs to give Senior closer Kevin Frost breathing room to finish the game.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Notre Dame jumped on the pitching early.  The Irish scored seven runs in the first three frames, thanks to a two run double by Tom Peterson and excellent base running by newcomer Clayton Bouchard.  Notre Dame coasted to an easy 8-2 victory to complete the sweep of the doubleheader.  Again, Notre Dame pitched many arms, anchored by Kevin Epp and other contributions from Nick Stolz, Tony Kestel and the always impressive Tory King.

CBND has Strong Expectations After Move to Division 1

In just the first two years of its existence, the University of Notre Dame Club Baseball Team has put together an exceptional record of 24-3.  This season, the expectations to compete with the best clubs is very real.  As the club team begins the 2015-2016 season, the schedule looks tougher than ever before. Tryouts were held and some great young talent was added to the roster. After moving up to Division 1 during the off-season, CBND has conference series scheduled for Illinois, Indiana, Purdue, Illinois St. and Ball St. We have high expectations this year as we compete with some of the best club teams in the country. Based on our past success, this move to Division 1 was well warranted, and with the increased talent level we look to continue our streak of dominance.
