Audition

To all new Notre Dame, Saint Mary’s College, or Holy Cross College students who are interested in joining our ensemble: welcome & congratulations! You are about to enter into four amazing, life-forming years. Hopefully the Notre Dame Folk Choir will be a part of that experience. If you are interested in auditioning, please read this information over carefully.

Audition Information

Auditions for the Folk Choir are held separate from the general audition session for other campus ensembles. Folk Choir auditions will be held Saturday, August 19, 2017 during Freshman Orientation weekend from 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. on the third floor of the Coleman-Morse Center. It is best to arrange an audition time with the director before arriving to campus. This way, you are guaranteed a time slot. You can contact the director here. Once you have reached out to the director, click here to see available times and reserve a slot.

The audition process consists of several things. First, there is an informal interview during which the director will get to know you: your personality, your interests, and your expectations of the Choir. This is followed by vocal exercises & warm-ups, after which you are expected to sing a well-known hymn. The audition typically concludes with a short example of sight reading. You are free to ask questions of the director throughout the entire audition. The whole audition lasts about twenty minutes and is one-on-one. If you would like to familiarize yourself with some of the Folk Choir repertoire, please visit our Youtube channel.

If you would like to be considered for other music ensembles but still prefer the Folk Choir as your first choice, still audition with us on Saturday. Decisions from the director will be made and posted by the end of the day. If you do not make it into the Choir, you are free to go through the audition process at DeBartolo Performing Arts Center (DPAC) for the other campus ensembles. This audition is much shorter (about six to eight minutes long) and will be attended by the choral directors of the ensembles mentioned below.

The auditions held in DPAC are for the Glee Club, Liturgical Choir, Women’s Liturgical Choir, and University Chorale. You can find out more about these ensembles and others below at their respective websites:

Upperclassmen and graduate students at Notre Dame/SMC/HC interested in the Folk Choir are most welcome to join our ensemble! Please contact the director prior to the end of the spring semester to schedule an audition time during study days. Upperclassmen and graduate students are also free to go through the beginning-of-the-year process described above.

If you have any further questions about the Folk Choir or the audition process not answered here, you can personally contact the director of the Folk Choir.
