Topic: Mathematics Behind Vaccine Regulations
Description: My research forces on the numerical analysis of fluids and structures interacting, but I have a passion for using mathematics to help experts make good public health policies, including vaccine recommendations. In this journal club meeting, we will explore some basic disease modeling techniques for populations and how these models can help inform these recommendations.
Paper reference: An introduction to compartmental modeling for the budding infectious disease modeler. (2018). Letters in Biomathematics, 5(1), 195-221. https://doi.org/10.30707/LiB5.1Blackwood.
Curious to see what SPI meetings look like? We host monthly discussions where we welcome new and returning members to discuss exciting science policy topics and enjoy good food! In the past, we’ve hosted science communication and memo-writing workshops, brought in experts to lead science policy discussions, and practiced policy pitches. For the 2025-2026 year, we are hoping to add in an occasional science-policy journal club and will be holding a memo-writing competition (with prizes!).
We determine monthly meeting times at the beginning of every semester. Subscribe to our weekly newsletter to stay up to date on these events!
