Year in Review: 2014

Seems like making photos at Notre Dame would be repetitive and predictable, right?  Move-in, Football season, Winter…winter…winter…Commencement, aaaand repeat.

Nope.  And that’s what keeps the job fun.  We’re always surprised and entertained by what’s around the corner.  Keeps us on our toes.  2014 was no exception.  Here’s a highlight from each month from both University Photographers.

Matt Cashore & Barbara Johnston

Barbara-
I think this photo sums up last January!

Matt-
I was lucky enough to make my first trip to Rome and visit Notre Dame’s Global Gateway there.  There’s nothing unusual about undergrads taking a break to play a pickup game of soccer, but with the Colosseum in the background?!?

Barbara-
I am often moved when I compose a portrait through the lens of my camera. I felt
very grateful when this man, an inmate at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City
granted me permission to photograph him after mass with Rev. David Link, C.S.C.,
the prison chaplain.

In 2014 the ACE Program kept me busy by joining them on several stops of their bus tour.  This was in Tampa, FL, a quick but welcome break from the winter we experienced.

Barbara-
It is always a challenge to get “clean” composition when shooting sports action. An
overhead remote camera is one way to accomplish that while also capturing the
competitive spirit of the athletes from a different perspective.

Barbara-
The Easter Vigil with Rev. Peter Roca, C.S.C., is one of the most beautiful masses held
in the Basilica. I make it a point to shoot it every year.

Matt-
The Easter Triduum is capped off by the C.S.C. Ordination Mass.  Ordination is one of my favorite events to photograph.  Steve Warner and the Folk Choir make the Basilica as pleasing to the ears as it is to the eyes.

Alleluia! This is my favorite time of year to photograph campus. Nothing motivates
me more than the beautiful tulips.

Every summer, members of the Football team participate in a one-credit community-based learning program in partnership with the Center for Social Concerns.  It’s a great combo of athletics, academics and service.

No sooner had they parked the bus than ACE was at it again with their annual Commencement ceremony.  I’m always pleasantly surprised at how many ACE graduates go on to become career educators.

I never grow tired of capturing people in motion as I did here with a very
enthusiastic, Mamadou Drame, a YALI Fellow from Dakar, Senegal.

Barbara-
I was fortunate to have the opportunity to travel to Ireland for Notre Dame’s
inaugural program, “Ireland Inside Track.” During the 8-day trip, I was lucky enough
to spend a morning taking photos at Kylemore Abbey. The only challenge for this
photo was waking at 4:30 am to arrive in time for the amazing morning light.

Matt-
August was hot but not THAT hot!  The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge got a lot of buzz over the summer and Fr. Jenkins volunteered to have not one but two icy buckets dumped on him by residence hall staff members.

Graduate student and bell maker, Benjamin Sunderlin shows the scale of the largest
bell in the spire on top of the Basilica, which houses the oldest carillon bells in the
United States. Who knew?

Matt-
Baraka Bouts are one of those “Only at Notre Dame” things.  Believe it or not, the girl in the blue trunks won this bout.

Barbara-
I was on my way to St. Michael’s to pick up my dry cleaning before calling it a day
when I caught a glimpse of ND sailboats on St. Joseph Lake. Because it was one of
those rare warm days in November and you know it is likely to be the last one until
spring, I could not ignore the opportunity. On the dock in front of the boathouse I
found sophomore, Patty Morrow stretching her legs after a jog.

Matt-
The Men’s Hoops team had an early conference opener and won it in decisive fashion with Zach Auguste putting the exclamation point on the win with this dunk.  This was shot with a remote-control camera.  I can’t see the frame as it’s shot, I just have to visualize and anticipate (That’s photographer-ese for “guess and hope”) and the effort produces far more failures than successes but it’s the successes that keep me motivated.  Thanks Zach!
