What is Business Analysis?

Business Analysis is the practice of enabling change in an organizational context, by defining needs and recommending solutions that deliver value to stakeholders; it is using a specific set of tools and techniques to identify, analyze, articulate, and facilitate the changes needed for how organizations work in order to drive business value delivery and success.

The value of business analysis is in realization of benefits, avoidance of cost, identification of new opportunities, understanding of required capabilities and modeling of the organizational process.

As business analysts, we define the goals and requirements for solutions that will maximize the value delivered to an organization’s stakeholders. We have the specialized knowledge to act as a guide and lead the business through unknown or unmapped territory, to get it to its desired destination.

At a high level, business analysis includes:

  • Investigation of a business problem/need from a holistic view of the situation
  • Evaluation of actions needed to solve the business problem/needs or improve the operation of a business system
  • (If applicable) Assisting with vendor selection, for Off-the-Shelf (OTS) and Software as a Service (SaaS) solutions
  • Assisting with solution validation
