The Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE) is certainly a jewel in the crown of Notre Dame and the most visible crown jewel of ACE is the recently completed Chapel of Christ the Teacher in the lower level of the Institute for Educational Initiatives. Bishop Kevin Rhoades visited campus on Friday, July 19 to bless and dedicate the chapel and altar.
A chapel blessing is a unique ceremony with three parts:
First, the bishop sprinkles holy water throughout the chapel–and Bishop Rhoades didn’t miss a spot!
Second, he spreads Holy Chrism on the altar itself–the only time this special oil is not used on a person.
And lastly, the entire chapel is filled with incense–just be sure to notify the fire department and turn off the smoke alarm first!
For 20 years, ACE has been training and sending teachers and administrators to Catholic schools around the country. Bishop Rhoades, in his homily, said, “Given the mission of ACE, it is most appropriate that this chapel bears the title ‘Christ the Teacher.'” The Bishop also mentioned another interesting fact: The altar in the Christ the Teacher Chapel contains a relic of St. Andre Bessette, the first member of the Congregation of Holy Cross to be canonized. He ended his homily by encouraging staff members and visitors to spend a few quiet moments in the chapel whenever they had the chance. He noted that it was a special privilege to work in a building with a chapel.
