Duel in the Dells Recap

Hello Irish fans,

Earlier this month we participated in Wisconsin’s fall tournament, Duel in the Dells. This marks our return to the field for the first time since November of 2019! Here is a rundown of how our weekend went:

The Irish won Game 1 with a shutout 6-0 against Wisconsin! Senior Nolan Downey started on the mound striking out two batters through one inning before exiting with an injury. The offense got on a roll in the 3rd inning starting with a walk by Liam Corcoran and a single by Brendan Hird to get runners on with no outs. Paddy Hincks gets the first RBI of the game with a single up the middle to score Corcoran. After a base-loading walk by Peter Colevas, Peter Mercurio drives Brendan Hird in with a sacrifice fly. With Hincks and Colevas on the bases, Hincks took home on a wild pitch, followed by Sam Sikkink hitting into an error to score Colevas. The Irish ended the inning with a 4-0 lead! The offense kept rolling in the 4th with Peter Mercurio driving in his second run of the day with a single to left field. Freshman Tony Ingram sent another run in the following at bat with a sacrifice fly to put the Irish up 6-0. The star of the show goes to freshman Danny Durkin who pitched 5 innings of relief and tallying 11 strikeouts while only allowing one hit. Leading the offense was freshman Liam Corcoran with two hits as well as senior Peter Mercurio with two hits and two RBIs!

Game 2 was trouble for the Irish against North Dakota resulting in a 9-3 loss. The Irish looked great through two innings with Peter Mercurio keeping North Dakota scoreless from the mound and freshman Tony Ingram smashing a 2-run bomb to left center all the way to the parking lot to put the Irish up 2-0. The 3rd and 4th innings were the downfall for the game due to defensive struggles allowing 8 runs. Sophomore Dash Wuller stepped into a sticky situation in the 4th, but ended the inning with a strikeout. The offense added one more run thanks again to a Tony Ingram double to start off the 5th inning followed by an RBI single by Danny Durkin. Sophomore Keaton Rodgers closed out the game on the mound during the 6th and 7th innings allowing no hits and striking out two! The offense was led by freshman Tony Ingram showing off his power with two extra base hits, two runs scored, and two RBIs.

The whole team came ready to play in a 10-2 victory over Purdue in the final game of the tournament for the Irish! In the 1st inning, Peter Mercurio drove a triple to right field driving in freshman Peter Royeca and Tony Ingram. The very next at bat Danny Durkin drove a double again to right field, scoring Mercurio for the last run of the inning. George Williams started on the mound pitching 2 innings while tallying 5 strikeouts and allowing one run but no hits. A double by Sam Sikkink in the 3rd drove in both Keaton Rodgers and Danny Durkin who reached on walks to put the Irish up 5-1. During the 4th, Junior Brady LaBahn singled and took second on a passed ball setting up an RBI single for Peter Mercurio. Junior Peter Colevas took the mound in the bottom of the 3rd with a dominating performance striking out every batter he faced in two innings of relief. After reaching on a single in the 5th, Dash Wuller scored off of a fielder’s choice ground ball by Brendan Hird to go up 7-1. A string of singles by Peter Mercurio, Travis Williams, and Sam Sikkink added another run for the Irish in the 6th. Both Sikkink and Williams tear up the basepath to score after stolen bases and passed balls to finish the offense off with 10 runs. Grad Student Alex Lavery closed out the game on the mound in the 5th and 6th allowing one run and one hit. The pitching staff gave a great group performance striking out 11 and only allowing 1 hit throughout the whole game.

Another bonus to the weekend was watching freshman Tony Ingram dominate the competition in the home run derby! He tallied 5 home runs during his round including a bomb to dead center easily clearing the 380 ft fence. The closest competitor only hit 2 home runs to give the easy victory to Ingram to wrap up the weekend in Wisconsin.

We are back on the field for our first conference series at Indiana for a 9 inning game the night of November 13th and a 7 inning double header the following morning. We would like to thank all of our fans for their continued support, especially those willing to make the trip to Wisconsin to cheer us on! Irish Baseball Back Fall 2021

It has been almost 2 years since the Irish have last taken the field, but we are back! After three semesters of hard work behind the scenes at practice and individual training, we will host an out of conference series and travel to a competitive tournament this fall. We want to thank all of the graduating upperclassmen who dedicated their time to train with the team without any competition to look forward to. They were great leaders teaching our young players what it takes to compete in the NCBA. All of the men are ready to get to work as soon as we are back on campus to continue the successful strides our program has accomplished pre-COVID. Stay tuned for updates on our schedule and upcoming tryouts!

Irish Sweep Hoosiers!

The fall season ended this weekend in the best way possible, with a 3 game sweep of the Indiana Hoosiers! Despite temperatures hovering around 40 degrees, the offense heated up, leading the team to 15-5, 15-5, and 12-2 victories.  Scoring 42 runs in one series took some outstanding offensive performances, notably from the legendary Brendan Hird, who collected 10 hits and 7 RBIs in the series, including 3 doubles and 3 triples. Senior Tony Grenier launched his first career homerun, and senior Zach Phillips also had a dinger of his own. Grad student Patrick Gray, playing in his first game after a four year hiatus from baseball, had 7 hits in 9 at-bats over the weekend. These were just a few of the many impressive individual performances that led to three great team wins. Here is a summary of each game:

Game 1: After Indiana opened the first with a run, the offense lit up. President Joe Corcoran, king of getting on base, worked a walk in his first at-bat, Brendan Hird knocked in two later that inning with his first triple of the weekend, and the offense never slowed down after that, recording at least a run in every frame. The score was 6-1 Irish in the 4th, with sophomore Peter Mercurio still on the bump after 3 strong innings. Indiana showed some fight, clawing back to a one-run deficit, before junior Patrick Harris came in to shut down the rally and keep the lead, 6-5. It was all Irish from that point on, as Hird lead off the fourth with another triple to his favorite place on the field, the right-center gap. Junior Jimmy Guckenberger followed with a double high off the left-center field fence, and Tony Grenier topped it all off with a homerun. Senior Andrew Conces threw two scoreless innings to finish the game, while the offense kept rolling until the slaughter rule ended the game at 15-5. Junior Jack Molumphy reached base 4 times, and Josh Dippold provided 4 quality at-bats, each of them assisting the already potent offense. Behind the dish for the game was Junior Cole Pickford, who was catching his first game since high-school. His fantastic performance included a clutch pick-off in the first inning and a runner caught trying to steal in the 5th. This stellar team performance in the game one beatdown set the tone for a successful weekend.

Game 2: Jake Fuehrmeyer started the game on the mound, and began the game with 2 scoreless innings. Patrick Gray helped break the scoreless tie by leading off the 2nd with a double and then advancing and scoring on passed balls. Indiana countered with 2 runs in the third, but then the top of the order for the Irish continued to rake. Corcoran led off with a single, Molumphy walked, and Hird smashed a double through the gap, scoring two. He scored on a wild pitch, taking a 4-2 lead into the fourth. Once again, Indiana’s offense showed up, ripping a 3-run homer over the right-field wall to retake the lead, 5-4. Of course, the Irish came right in the bottom of the fourth, batting completely around the order and putting up a 7 spot. Key hits in the inning came from Junior Kyle Cockrell, Dippold, Guckenberger, and Hird. This 11-5 lead was never relinquished as Pat Harris shut down the Indiana offense in the 5th. Molumphy led off the bottom of the 5th with a triple, and following singles from Guckenberger and Gray, Zach Phillips ended the game as a slaughter with a two-run homer off the top of the left field wall for yet another 15-5 Irish win.

Game 3: With a series win in the books, the Irish called on ace Kyle Cockrell to pitch the finale. A pitching duel ensued, and the Irish eventually tied the game at 1 in the 4th inning with Cole Pickford’s second hit of the game. The Irish evened the score once again in the 5th, with Hird singling and eventually scoring on an RBI groundout by Guckenberger, and finally took the lead in the 6th after Josh Dippold reached on a walk, took second and third on wild pitches, and scored on a dropped third strike. Thanks to 6 impressive innings by Cockrell, the Irish had a 3-2 lead after the 6th. After Freshman Brady Labahn shutdown Indiana offense in the top of the 7th, assisted by an incredible diving play at third by Fuehrmeyer and a nifty scoop at first by Phillips, the Irish offense put up a 9 spot to once again finish the game in a slaughter rule, 12-2. Hird continued to mash the baseball with a triple and a double in the same inning, while Corcoran, Mercurio, and Dippold also had key RBI hits. This game capped off a perfect weekend of baseball in which the Irish outscored Indiana 42-12.

We would like to thank everyone for the support throughout the fall baseball season! Our 6-1 record proved that we can contend for not only the conference title, but also the regional and national titles. While we will surely enjoy the short break from baseball, we are all looking forward to continue the success into the spring!

Battle Creek Blast Tournament

Our first tournament of the year was a success! We earned the #1 seed in bracket play after going 3-0 in pool play, beating Central Michigan, Ferris State, and Michigan State. Unfortunately, we fell to Michigan State in a semifinal rematch by a score of 9-8, after coming back from 6-1 and 9-4 deficits.

This weekend provided an exciting preview of the 2019-2020 club baseball season. The new players stepped right up and provided huge contributions to the team. Brendan Hird went 3-4 with 2 RBIs in the semifinal game against Michigan State, while hitting the ball hard all weekend. Josh Dippold was 5-10 overall while playing solid defense in left field and at shortstop. Jake Fuehrmeyer pitched a gem against Ferris State, with 5 scoreless innings. Sam Sikkink went 3-8 with 4 walks and two HBP.

Other key performers during the tournament included Nolan Downey, who threw 5.2 inning with 1 earned run to get the win against Michigan State, and was also 3-6 at the plate throughout the weekend. Seniors Jens Rataczak and Joe Corcoran had OBPs over .600 during the tournament, and Jens worked hard behind the plate, catching 3 of the 4 games. Pitcher Tim Eiden was a shutdown reliever, throwing 4.1 innings overall, with 0 earned runs.

This first tournament was quite the team effort, and it shows that we have the talent and the drive to go far this year! We are off until November 9-10, allowing us a lot of time to put in work and get even better before our next series.

Irish Sweep Purdue!

This past weekend, the Irish took the field against the Purdue Boilermakers looking to settle unfinished business from the fall, when CBND tied Purdue in a tournament game. Now with a record of 7-1-1, the Irish were ready to prove that they were the better team.

Game 1 got off to a rocky start when the Boilermakers put up 3 runs in the top of the 1st inning on starter Dom Nunag (6 IP, 3 ER, 6 K). The Irish got on the board in the 3rd inning with 2 runs, including a CBI (Corcoran Batted In) single to left field by catcher Jens Rataczak (1-4, 2 RBI). Nunag, reliever Andrew Conces (W, 1 IP, 2K), and an error-free Irish defense kept the game at this score heading into the bottom of the 7th inning. The Irish started a rally in the last frame when pinch-hitter Andrew Turzai walked to lead off the inning. After two singles and a Purdue error, Matt Babuskow came to the plate with one out, the score tied, and the bases loaded. Babuskow—who entered the game in the 4th inning when Mike Massaro was injured on a HBP—came out swinging and singled to right on the first pitch of the at-bat for a walkoff victory. Irish win 4-3!

Game 2 got started in similar fashion, when Purdue scored 1 in the top of the 1st. However, this one proved to be a back and forth affair. The Irish responded in the bottom of the 2nd when Jack Corcoran (2-3, 2 RBI) singled on a line drive to center field. The tied ballgame did not last long, as the Boilermakers tallied 1 run in the top of the 3rd on starter Sean Hager (W, 6 IP, 7 K, 2 ER), but this was the last time Purdue would cross the plate. The Irish took the lead for good in the bottom of the 4th after the first three batters reached base, a Jack Corcoran sac-fly, and an RBI-walk by Tony Kestel. The Irish tacked on 1 more run later in the inning on another RBI-walk by Andrew Rockamann. This 4-2 lead was all that Hager needed as he shut down the Boilermaker bats for the rest of his outing. Reliever Tim Eiden (SV, 1 IP, 2 K) closed the door in the 7th, picking up the save. Irish win 4-2!

In the 9-inning Game 3, the Irish again struggled to keep Purdue off the board in the top of the 1st, but the Irish quickly responded this time with 3 runs of their own in the bottom of the 1st, taking the lead 3-1. Purdue struck again in the 3rd inning and the Irish went to their bullpen in the 4th when Conor Fitzgerald (W, 2.2 IP, 0 H, 2 ER) replaced starter Danny Bicknell (3 IP, 5 ER, 1 K). The Irish trailed 5-3 heading into the 5th inning, when they put 5 runs in each of the next two frames. The Irish’s two long innings were a result of consecutive tough at-bats, in which the Irish refused to make an out. The rallies included 9 singles, 5 walks, and a sacrifice fly. The team had no problems hanging on to this 13-7 lead for the remainder of the game. Tim Eiden closed this one out with 2 IP, 4 K, and 0 BB. Highlight performers at the dish for the Irish include Nick Gron (2-4, 3 R, 1 BB), Joe Corcoran (2-5, 3 RBI), and Jack Corcoran (1-3, 2 R, 1 RBI, 2 BB).

Not only did the Irish sweep Purdue this weekend, but they captured their first D1 wins against the Boilermakers. The Irish improve to 10-1-1 on the season and 6-0 in the conference. Easter break is this coming weekend but the team is gearing up for a 3-game set at the University of Illinois on Saturday 4/7 and Sunday 4/8. This series will have serious post-season implications, as the winning team will be in the driver’s seat in the Great Lakes South Conference. Stay tuned!

Fighting Irish Start Spring with Sweep of Indiana

After a successful fall season in which the team went 4-1-1, the Irish were back in action this weekend (March 3rd and 4th). Due to inclement weather in South Bend, the team took their talents southeast, to Bishop Chatard High School where they hosted Indiana University for a three game series.

The 9-inning Game One was started on the mound by senior Danny Bicknell, who went 5.1 innings, surrendering 3 runs (1 earned) and striking out 6. This game was back-and-forth early on. The Irish trailed 3-2 when Bicknell was replaced by Andrew Conces (3.2 IP, 6 K, 0 R). The Irish struck in the bottom of the 7th, when freshman shortstop Jack Molumphy knocked in the tying run on a fielder’s choice and Zach Phillips scored the eventual game winning run on a wild pitch. Conces kept Indiana’s bats silent for the remainder of the game to pick up the W, by a score of 4-3.

In Game Two, the Irish took a 1-0 lead when Molumphy scored when Mike Massaro grounded into a fielder’s choice. Starting pitcher Dom Nunag (4 IP, 6 K, 2 ER) surrendered the lead back to Indiana in the 4th inning, 2-1. Senior Andrew Skomra gave the Irish two-thirds of an inning in relief before turning it over to Tim Eiden (2.1 IP, 3 K, 0 H, 0 R). The Irish went into the bottom of the 5th trailing 4-1, when they regained the lead 5-4. Phillips drove in the tying and go-ahead runs on a single to left field. From here, Eiden shut the door and the Irish hung on to win 5-4.

Sophomore transfer Sean Hager took the mound for the Irish in Game Three. He surrendered no runs and no hits over four innings, striking out six, but a high pitch count forced him to exit this game. Hager combined with freshman Kyle Cockrell (3 IP, 4 K) to shutout the Hoosiers in this one. Jens Rataczak knocked in the decisive run in the first inning of this contest, when he singled up the middle to score Joe Corcoran. The Irish blew this one open in the third inning, scoring five runs off of RBIs from Jamie Abrams, Tony Kestel, Joe Corcoran, and Andrew Rockamann. The Irish finished this series off with a 6-0 exclamation point victory.

With the series sweep of Indiana, the Irish improve to 7-1-1 on the year and 3-0 in the Great Lakes South Conference. Spring Break is next week, and then the Irish will be back in action at home against Purdue on March 24/25. Stay tuned!
