Just a few days ago, Notre Dame Cycling had the opportunity to do some tempo work with our friends at ErgVideo™. At just over an hour, the “course” had us rolling through the countryside of Virginia with a group of four riders. After a 15ish minute warmup, it was time to get moving, and our four video friends in the group made it known they were ready to put the hammer down, with a couple of them making a break for it almost immediately. While we ended up “catching” them in the end, it made much of the ride feel like a chase. Our ride had us doing the majority of our work above 80% of each of our FTPs, with intervals that had us as high as 120%, with it really depending on the geography. We definitely had some moments of hurt down in the basement of Innovative Endurance on those short, but big, pushes. What was most likable about the program was that it felt like a strong group ride in real terrain. It definitely was not a lolly-gagging Sunday afternoon group ride with stops for ice cream cones in the middle! For those that haven’t been to Virginia to ride, there’s no need now. The ErgVideo™ team didn’t a great job of simulating the rolling nature of that area. Also notable was the fact that despite our differing power outputs, we were all able to still ride together and share in the pain! Given the fact that we were experiencing a hellacious winter day that morning, riding with ErgVideo™ was definitely the smart choice for all of us.
