Blue-Gold-Green Race
On the weekend of October 11-13, the Notre Dame Cycling Team held its annual Blue-Gold-Green Race. Splitting the team into three squads and racing against ourselves, it makes for some good competition during our offseason from road racing. Festivities got underway with Friday’s (no aero equipment) 6 mile individual time trial. On the women’s side, grad student Lillie Romeiser narrowly took the win with a time of 17:08, just five seconds faster than sophomore Paige Handy and freshman Sarah Cullen. The best time of the day was set by junior Jim Snitzer, at 13:54, with grad student Andrew O’Donnell and junior John Pratt taking 2nd and 3rd, respectively.
Saturday’s 21 mile road race made for some very exciting racing with large time gaps. Despite missing the winning break, freshman James Pratt (5th) and sophomore Joe Mueller (6th) put in very strong performances and showed good promise for the future of Notre Dame Cycling.
After a successful attack with about 2 miles to go, John Pratt managed to stay away from chasers Snitzer and O’Donnell to take the win. Handy was the first woman to cross the line.
Sunday, the final day of racing, saw John Pratt take his third consecutive Blue-Gold-Green criterium title ahead of O’Donnell and Mueller, who finished 3rd in his first ever criterium. Sophomore Sam Melgar K (4th) and grad student Tom Frederick (5th) also performed well. Romeiser won the women’s crit, while freshman Emma-Kate Conlin took 2nd. Congratulations to David Berno, Joe Mueller, Martin Duchoissis, John Clifford, Jon Leslie, Tom Frederick, Lillie Romeiser, Sarah Cullen, and Emma-Kate Conlin, all of whom made their Notre Dame bike racing debuts during the Blue-Gold-Green weekend.
Ride with Lance Armstrong
On Saturday, August 3, four members of the Notre Dame Cycling Team (John Pratt, Michael Chifala, Joe Magro, and Jim Snitzer) had the opportunity to ride with Lance Armstrong in Aspen, CO. It all started with a lighthearted tweet from the CyclingIrish twitter page at Lance, asking, “Can we come try to drop you?” Surprisingly, he responded and invited the four of us for a 4-hour ride around Aspen Saturday morning.
The ride started out going downhill from Aspen. After over an hour of easy descending, we knew we were in for a hard next 3 hours. First, he took us up the climb where he did his fitness testing during his training for the Tour. Lance was impressed with how well some of us climbed. Although, we would never drop him, he never managed to drop all of us during any of the day’s climbs. Both Joe and John even outsprinted him at county line signs. For the last 30 miles of the ride, Lance took us on the course of stage 1 of the USA Pro Challenge, before heading back to his house. Even at 41 years-old, he was incredibly strong, as we expected from a Tour de France legend. In total, it was an awesome 80-mile ride and we were all thoroughly tired.
While Lance has certainly been a subject of controversy in the last year, he was nothing short of terrific to us. We thank him for inviting us and are proud to call him a friend of Notre Dame Cycling!
