ND Cycling in the News

Thanks again to the City of South Bend for helping us host our home race for the third consecutive year. Without the support of the South Bend Police, Public Works Department, our corner marshal volunteers, among many others, we could not host such a successful event every spring. We’re proud to share our bike friendly community with the best collegiate cyclists in the Midwest and look forward to giving back to Michiana in the year to come.

A Notre Dame Cycling Christmas

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house,

Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.

The bikes were parked by the tree with care,

In hopes that St. Nicholas would upgrade them there.

The riders were nestled all snug in their beds,

While visions of Alp d’ Huez danced in their heads,

And Luke in his Nikes, and Emmy in her cap,

Had both settled in for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the roadway there arose such a clatter,

Andrew time trialed out of bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the window John flew like a flash,

Watts over 1200, let’s hope he won’t crash. Continue reading “A Notre Dame Cycling Christmas”

Bike Michiana for Hospice

South Bend — For the second straight year, Notre Dame Cycling spent a September Sunday volunteering at the Annual Bike Michiana  for Hospice ride. ND riders staffed sag stops at both Spicer Lake County Park and the Eibel Golf Course, cutting avocados, refilling water jugs, and offering encouragement to the nearly 1,000 riders who took part in the event. The Bike Michiana Coalition raised over $20,000 for Hospice care with this ride, and ND Cycling is proud to be a small part of the event’s continued success.

ND Cycling Promotes Reading and Active Lifestyles

This spring, ND Cycling is partnering with Bike the Bend and the South Bend Silver Hawks to promote reading and healthy lifestyles in local elementary schools.  Swoop’s reading club encourages elementary school children to read for small incentives such as Bike the Bend bookmarks, posters, and coloring sheets. Once each student has hit a “home run” of reading, they win a ticket to a Silverhawks game.  At the start of the reading program, the Silver Hawks’ mascot Swoop goes to the school for an assembly to talk about why reading is important.  ND Cycling, in race attire with bikes in hand, speaks to the students not only to promote reading, but also to show how cool bike riding is!

Bike Michiana for Hospice

Some ND riders spent Sunday September 11th volunteering at the Spicer lake sag stop of the annual Bike Michiana for Hospice Ride.  Up bright and early, by 8am we arrived at the start line and were greeted warmly by hundreds of cyclists taking part in the day’s festivities.  The twenty miles out to Spicer Lake were largely uneventful and although the news had promised rain, blue skies and sun washed over the rolling fields and scattered woods of Northern Indiana all morning. Staff at Spicer lake encouraged us to do some more riding before our shift started at 11, so we took off on a 25 mile route of largely unknown territory. Continue reading “Bike Michiana for Hospice”
