2022 – 2023 Season

2022-’23: The team lost 6 seniors and four starters from the team that took 10th at Nationals the year before.  There were only 2 seniors on the team: Charlotte Welsh and Yajali Rodriguez.  Many players needed to step up and learn new roles and gain skill and they did so as the season went on.  We had to give up our Irish Invite weekend in February to the CWPA because other schools were unable to host.  We subsequently had to cancel the Invite on its new weekend in March because the Big Ten had their CWPA tournament that same weekend and other teams canceled on us late.  The bar was set early in the season with a close win vs Michigan State in their pool and a tough loss to Michigan (who went on to win the National Championship) in the same tournament.  We renewed the full Spring Break trip with multiple scrimmages and the Foothill tournament.  There were only two college club teams at Foothill as clubs continued to struggle recovering from the pandemic.  We went undefeated in Midwest conference play, ultimately winning the programs 14th Midwest Championship (3rd most all time behind Cal Poly’s 17 and Florida’s 15).  We qualified for the National Championships for the record tying 16th time. We were seeded 10th at NCCC’s and beat the 7th seed Florida State in the first round, dropped a game we led after the 1st quarter to the eventual National Runner Up UC Santa Barbara 5-9 in the second round and a very tough 8-11 loss to Texas A&M in the third round.  We bounced back with a 14-9 win vs the 8th seed Boston University to finish 7th. Our 14th top ten finish in program history. Junior Olivia Sanders was selected to the NCCC All Tournament second team. Our highest and final ranking of the season was #6 after Nationals. Team Captains were Charlotte Welsh, Emily Shank, Grace Kellerman and Olivia Sanders (2nd Semester). Olivia Sanders was named Midwest MVP, Coughlin was named Midwest conference coach of the year. Juniors Olivia Sanders, Grace Kellerman, Emily Shank and Sophomore Rory Kilmer were named All Midwest 1st Team. Senior Charlotte Welsh, and Sophomores Abygail Dravis and Lauren Rodenberg were named All Midwest 2nd Team. This is only the third time in Midwest Conference and Team history that all seven ND starters earned All Midwest honors.
