I often feel as though my outreach and science communication efforts are the most important thing I do. In the past, I founded a Science on Tap series in the Capital region of New York as well as in Grand Rapids, MI. This event is an opportunity for conversation, debate and interaction between scientists and the public while drinking a beer. Each month an expert hosted a scientific discussion in a local bar. From that, I helped to co-found CapSci, a not-for-profit organization focused on informal STEM outreach in the Capital Region of New York. Our mission is to promote interactions between scientists and non-scientists, foster science-based public policy and scientifically literate policy makers, and nurture diversity within the scientific community.
I organized a massive Darwin Day celebration at Grand Valley State University. I also regularly run science communication workshops and co-host the Sausage of Science podcast.
