2023 – 2024 Season

2023-24:  The regular season and scheduling remained a post-COVID issue as tournaments were tough to come by and fewer teams were willing to travel outside of their CWPA schedule. That said, we did get a fall tournament at UVA which was a huge help to our season.   Won the Midwest Championship at home in Rolf’s with an 11-5 win over Grand Valley, the team’s third in a row following the return from COVID.  It marked the 15th time the team has won the Midwest Championship tied with Florida for the second most all-time (Cal Poly is 1st with 17).  We received an automatic bid to Collegiate Club Nationals at Texas A&M; extending our CWPA record for most NCCC appearances to 17.  We finished with our fourth highest finish at National, 5th place. We after some crazy travel delays including an unexpected overnight at O’Hare due to weather in Texas we made it to A&M only 2 hours before our first game.  After shaking off some travel funk we beat the Rocky Mountain champion’s the University of Colorado in the first round.  In the second round we played a very good and very deep UCLA team.  We played a back and forth game.  We took a one goal lead a couple minutes into the fourth quarter but ultimately lost a hard fought game by 2.  We bounced back to take down Mid Atlantic champs West Chester University and a very solid and persistent Florida State team to finish 3-1 on the weekend and in 5th place. Grace Kellerman earned 1st team all tournament at Nationals.  Seniors Grace Kellerman, Olivia Sanders, and Emily Shank, as well as Junior Lauren Rod Rodenberg were named 1st Team All Midwest Conference.  Junior Rory Kilmer was named 2nd Team All Midwest.  Olivia Sanders was named Midwest Conference MVP and Coughlin was named MW Coach of the Year.  We also had 4 players earn All American status.  Grace Kellerman was named a 1st Team All American (her third AA selection), Olivia Sanders was named 2nd Team All American (her third AA selection). Emily Shank was named 2nd Team All American (her second AA Selection).  Lauren Rodenberg was named 3rd Team All American.  We spent three weeks ranked #1 (or tied for #1) in the polls.  We finished ranked #5 in the country, the fourth highest in program history.  Our 19-2 overall record and our 19-1 record against other collegiate club teams were both records for winning percentage in team history.  Team Captains were Grace Kellerman, Olivia Sanders, and Emily Shank.

Our 2024 Seniors + Dawg extra cappy at Texas A&M Nationals

2022 – 2023 Season

2022-’23: The team lost 6 seniors and four starters from the team that took 10th at Nationals the year before.  There were only 2 seniors on the team: Charlotte Welsh and Yajali Rodriguez.  Many players needed to step up and learn new roles and gain skill and they did so as the season went on.  We had to give up our Irish Invite weekend in February to the CWPA because other schools were unable to host.  We subsequently had to cancel the Invite on its new weekend in March because the Big Ten had their CWPA tournament that same weekend and other teams canceled on us late.  The bar was set early in the season with a close win vs Michigan State in their pool and a tough loss to Michigan (who went on to win the National Championship) in the same tournament.  We renewed the full Spring Break trip with multiple scrimmages and the Foothill tournament.  There were only two college club teams at Foothill as clubs continued to struggle recovering from the pandemic.  We went undefeated in Midwest conference play, ultimately winning the programs 14th Midwest Championship (3rd most all time behind Cal Poly’s 17 and Florida’s 15).  We qualified for the National Championships for the record tying 16th time. We were seeded 10th at NCCC’s and beat the 7th seed Florida State in the first round, dropped a game we led after the 1st quarter to the eventual National Runner Up UC Santa Barbara 5-9 in the second round and a very tough 8-11 loss to Texas A&M in the third round.  We bounced back with a 14-9 win vs the 8th seed Boston University to finish 7th. Our 14th top ten finish in program history. Junior Olivia Sanders was selected to the NCCC All Tournament second team. Our highest and final ranking of the season was #6 after Nationals. Team Captains were Charlotte Welsh, Emily Shank, Grace Kellerman and Olivia Sanders (2nd Semester). Olivia Sanders was named Midwest MVP, Coughlin was named Midwest conference coach of the year. Juniors Olivia Sanders, Grace Kellerman, Emily Shank and Sophomore Rory Kilmer were named All Midwest 1st Team. Senior Charlotte Welsh, and Sophomores Abygail Dravis and Lauren Rodenberg were named All Midwest 2nd Team. This is only the third time in Midwest Conference and Team history that all seven ND starters earned All Midwest honors.

2021 – 2022 Season

2021-’22: It was a very strange year as it was the first season after returning from the COVID pandemic. We got off to a great start with a perfect weekend at the Irish Invite at Rolf’s by beating MSU, UofM and Oregon.  Coughlin did not go on Spring Break as CA was still not very open and the week was spent mostly in workouts.  SDSU hosted as did a club in Fullerton.  The best the team looked all year was at Midwest Championships.  Definitely peaked for that weekend.  Nationals was the weekend after Final Exams so we did not practice for 10 straight days before leaving.  Also, the seeding at Nationals got pretty jumbled around due to teams not competing due to lingering COVID issues.  This resulted in us having to play UCSB (#6) in the first round.  The Game at Nationals vs. Grand Valley was one for the ages. It is the only undefeated regular season (pre-nationals) that we have EVER had resulting in the highest overall season winning percentage in the history of the program .900, previous high mark was .868 in 2009). We did not have a player selected to the NCCC team. We had three players named first team All-Midwest, Senior Molly Soper and Sophomores Grace Kellerman and Olivia Sanders.  Senior Lindsey Shank and Sophomore Emily Shank were  named to the second team.  Sophomore Grace Kellerman was named CWPA Midwest Conference MVP.  Coughlin was named Midwest Coach of the Year.  Grace Kellerman was named a 2nd Team All American and Olivia Sanders was named Honorable Mention All American in 2022.  Our highest ranking during the season was #1 after the Irish Invite, our final ranking after Nationals was #13. We spent most of the season in the top 5. Team Captains were Edie Uebelhor, Caitlin Llyod and Lindsey Shank.

2020 – 2021 Season

2020-’21: The University re-opened for in person instruction for the 2020-’21 academic year with major restrictions on student activities, no unnecessary travel and no University guest/visitors (aka no hosting water polo).  We were given 2 hours of pool time two days a week.  Practices were mostly swimming and a time for the team to be together.  There was no contact allowed and players had to stay in 8 person practice pods without intermixing.  After the vaccine release in late March/early April some of the restrictions loosen and we actually held two scrimmages.  The captains once again did an amazing job keeping the team together and moving forward, even recruiting a number of new players.  Team Captains were Julia Zimlich, Edie Uebelhor and Lindsey Shank.

2019 – 2020 Season

2019-’20: This season was a very young team and it was a rebuilding year.  After a tough start the team started to come together at the first CWPA tournament at Ohio University.  The team left for Spring Break without Coughlin for the first time.  The team worked out in San Diego at SDSU before working out with a high school team in LA.  There they stayed with the Shank family.  On Tuesday of Spring Break the University shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  The entire team departed California individually and went straight to their homes.  Team Captains were Julia Zimlich, Sarah Peterson, and Lindsey Shank.  The captains (2 juniors and a sophomore) did an amazing job leading the trip and making sure everyone got home safely.
