From the Director of Theatre
For 47 years, Dr. Reginald Bain has been an active member of the Notre Dame Community. He has directed and acted in more departmental productions than anyone in the history of Notre Dame Theatre. The show you are seeing this evening is the last play Dr. Bain will direct for the Department of Film, Television, and Theatre before he achieves Emeritus status. After a year of sabbatical leave next season, Dr. Bain will retire from the University in the spring of 2001.
The thousands of students and faculty who have worked with Dr. Bain have grown to respect his spirit and admire his artistic vision. Since his first directing project in 1966-67, The Madwoman of Chaillot, through his current production of The Love of the Nightingale, students have had the opportunity to work with one of the finest directors at any university. They have laughed and cried with him, onstage and offstage. He has had an impact on the career choices of a vast number of students.
It is with the utmost respect for Dr. Reginald Bain that I ask you to celebrate with the cast and crew of The Love of the Nightingale, as well as the faculty and students of the Department of Film, Television, and Theatre, this final directing project of Dr. Bain.
Reg is a treasured colleague. On behalf of the Notre Dame students, faculty, and theatre audiences, I thank him for allowing us to be a part of his theatrical world.
–Richard E. Donnelly
