+ We are grateful for the support of the Institute for Scholarship in the Liberal Arts, College of Arts and Letters, which enabled us to bring Eric back to campus for this production.
Note: Last spring marked the retirement of Richard E. Donnelly after more than 30 years of service to Notre Dame. We asked former chair Mark Pilkinton to reflect on Rick’s impact on the theatre program.
I hired Rick (who was at Purdue) as a guest artist for our production of Amadeus (March 1988), and his creative contribution to the show helped to make it a huge Washington Hall success. (That production also was Jane Paunicka’s first production for us.) Amadeus sold out, and there were rumors of scalped tickets! Rick returned the next year as a guest to design Twelfth Night, also a huge hit, and joined us permanently in 1989-90, the same year we announced the separation of the theatre program from Saint Mary’s College. Rick worked brilliantly under less than ideal conditions for many years in Washington Hall and built shows that were always visually stunning and academically informed. Perhaps most memorable to me was our approaching The School For Scandal (April 1999) from the costume design perspective, elevating costume design to the conceptual forefront and generating a show that was one of my absolute favorites. It was all about silhouettes, but Rick can tell you more about that. He was just brilliant to work with, and I always knew he would give it his absolute best which was always above and beyond the call of duty. He was my colleague, peer, and friend, and I recall our years working together to bring theatre to Notre Dame with great fondness and affection.
Mark C. Pilkinton, Professor Emeritus
